CAU Inter Counties Cross Country Championships, Prestwold Hall, Loughborough 9th March 2019

Thirteen club athletes battled against the strong winds for Essex at the Inter Counties Championships at Loughborough on Saturday.

Kate O'Neill made a late decision to compete after a recent foot injury and was rewarded with a fine 16th place in the Under 20 women's competition to lead home the Essex team. Her performance built on her earlier British Athletics Cross Challenge series results at Milton Keynes, Liverpool and Belfast, and earned her a 200 prize for overall third place in the series. Sophie Rand placed 70th but National runner up Jess Mitchell was unwell and was forced to drop out after collapsing.

Natalie Sewell continued her good form with 50th in the Under 15 Girls' event as Chloe Rand was 118th, with the Essex team edged into fourth by four points, while in the Under 15 Boys' race Alex Ford was 122nd. Sam Atkins had his best result in a national event to date in the Under 20 Men race with his 65th place finish, with Tom Keevil close behind him in 70th.

In the Senior Men's competition Grant Twist finished 73rd and fourth Essex athlete home, as Southend's Adam Hickey unexpectedly claimed gold and World Championships selection, with Rob Warner's 126th place and Ben Davis's 133rd on his senior county debut making the scoring six for the county team who placed ninth..
