Havering Mayesbrook's senior ladies knew that to progress to the semi finals of the Jubilee Cup, they had to finish in the top 3 at Kingston last Sunday, against some strong Division 1 opposition. Justifying their top of Division 2 position, they confirmed their ability to compete with the best by finishing the day in second place.
There was a string of good results throughout the competition, but the performance of the day belonged to Laurie Cossey in the 400m. Running the one lap with the disadvantage of an outside lane, she entered the home straight with a clear lead which she maintained to the line, knocking nearly half a second off of her personal best.
Faye Fullerton, just 16, who had stepped up from the younger ranks to compete for the seniors, was confronted by a class field in the 800m. Undaunted by the opposition, Faye ran a superb race to finish a close third, showing once again what a wonderful p rospect she is for the future.
There were further good points collected on the track by Ruth McMenemy (3rd -100m, 2nd - 200m), Joanne Sullivan (2nd - 1500m), Nikkii Barnett (4th - 3000m), Kate Brewington (3rd - 100mH) and Ruth O'Sullivan (4th 400mH). On the field Sarah Deacon christened her brand new discus by throwing it to a new PB distance of 32.33m, and a creditable third place. She had previously finished fourth in both the hammer and javelin.
In a relatively new event for the ladies, the pole vault, Hannah Gamester picked up 5 welcomed points for her equal third position, in what was her first attempt at the event. Brewington (2nd - high jump, 6th - shot) and Sue Bunting (3rd - triple jump) rounded off the individual competitions.
To complete the meeting and maintain the teams overall second place, both relay squads came home in third place. Terri Johnson joining Brewington, Gamester and McMenemy in the 4x100m, and Lesley Felton with O'Sullivan, Fullerton and Cossey in the 4x400m.
The ladies now await the outcome of the other Cup matches to find who their opposition will be in the semi final at Enfield on 23rd July. In the mean time the team return to league duty with a home fixture at Mayesbrook Park, Barking, on Saturday 24th June, when the competition will be from Bracknell, Hounslow, Parkside (Harrow), and Brighton.
