McDONALD'S LEAGUE - MAY 21, 2000

Boys' Southern Premier League - Enfield

SECOND AGAIN FOR BOY ATHLETES

Whilst no match for the home Club, Enfield & Haringey, Havering Mayesbrook AC's under-17 boys' team performed creditably in their McDonald's Southern Premier league match at Enfield on Sunday.

In finishing in second place ahead of Woking and Basildon, the team consolidated their league position and a middle of the table position at the end of the season already looks guaranteed.

As in their first McDonald's match three weeks ago, the highlight was the magnificent sprint double success of under-15 Matthew Kelsey. Consistently achieving Grade 1 performances, Kelsey will be looking for success in the Essex Schools Championships en route to a tilt at the English Schools title.

In the 200m in this age group, newcomer Andrew Bartlett ran well to take the 'B' string event and there was another 'A' and 'B' string double victory for Bob Thanda and Peter Phillips in the 400m. Thanda also took the Long Jump.

Havering Mayesbrook athletes achieved a number of runner-up positions including James Deane and Andrew Bright (1500m), Phillips and Terry O'Leary (80m Hurdles and Discus), Mark Connelly ('B' Long Jump), Adam Lee and Scott Keating (Shot) and O'Leary (Hammer).

There was another Long Jump success in the under-17 age group when Mark Gardiner leaped to a new personal best of 5.97m. The under-17 throwers again performed consistently well including a new personal best of 42.83m in the Hammer for Kevin Deacon and a Javelin throw of 47.32m for Greg Smith, both finishing second. Andrew Tierney was also runner-up in the Discus, 'B' Javelin and Hammer events whilst Deacon and Tom Melrose were also second in the 'A' and 'B' Shot.

Andrew Cattell made his first appearance of the season and ran well to take the runner-up slot in both the 100m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles. Finally in this age group, Sean Vargas took second in the Long Jump and Steven Prady was runner-up in the 400m.

For the under-13s, the only individual success went to Paul Andrews with a strong running performance in the 800m. Newcomer Dean Shirley impressed with 4.39m for second place in the Long Jump and there were also good runner-up positions for David Nefs (100m and 200m), Christian Newton ('B' 800m and Shot) and Kurt Smith (Shot).

The boys' McDonald's campaign continues at Croydon on Sunday, June 4 when the strong opposition includes the home club, AFD and Worthing.

Girls' South East Division 1 - Hillingdon

GIRL ATHLETES ALREADY SET FOR PROMOTION

Havering Mayesbrook AC's under-17 girl athletes travelled to Hillingdon on Sunday for their first McDonald's South East Division 1 match and came away the victors by almost 100 points. The way this competition is structured, the girls will meet the same opposition again on three more occasions and so look destined to achieve promotion for the second year in succession.

Two of the local Club's athletes won Athlete-of-the-Match awards. Megan Foley took the track award (following her recent Essex County Championship success) with a Grade 1 victory in the under-13 800m whilst Melanie Harrison won the field award for her success in the under-15 Discus.

Other winners were Emma Baglin and Faye Powell (u-17 'A' and 'B' 1500m), Laura Jones (u-15 100m and 'B' 200m), Lynsey Clark (u-15 'B' 800m, High Jump and Discus), Harrison (Javelin and 'B' Shot), Caroline Smith (u-15 Shot), Katie O'Sullivan (High Jump), and Carmel Munson ('B' 1500m).

The u-15 4x100m relay quartet of Jones, Clark, Nicola Schofield and Danielle Ross was also successful.
