London Mini Marathon – Sunday, 19th April 2004

Havering Mayesbrook young athletes again dominated the London Mini Marathon events on Sunday winning an amazing four of the six team prizes and three individual golds, backed up by two individual silvers.

The dominance was almost complete in the Boys 13-14 race where Havering athletes filed no less than six of the top ten places, with Matthew Watkins getting the better of Brad Tungatt in the battle for gold as they made it a one-two, while Matt Bloy, Joe Webster, Steve MacLachlan, and Grant Twist finished in close formation from seventh to tenth. The team ran away with gold, with Daniel Winters (27th) and Danny Walker (46th) making up the 8-strong team.

The Girls 15-17 race was also a happy hunting ground for local athletes. Katie Richardson put in a determined effort to take gold, as Megan Foley was 24 secs adrift in silver – reversing the positions from the 13-14 race last year.  With Sara Luck in 7th, Robyn Matson (representing Barking & Dagenham) eighth and Vicky Smith, returning from a long injury lay off in 12th there was again a gold medal team showing. As the price of fame Katie later had to endure a live TV interview with Sue Barker!

The Girls 13-14 team walked off with the team medals thanks to a solid team effort as the rapidly improving Clare Robinson’s 6th place led home Lauren Clark (9th) and Hayley Thomas (10th), while Rachael Newman in 14th just beat Amie Adams (B&D), as Danielle Raymond (Coopers) and Jade Edwards completed the scoring six.

It was again a good team performance that brought the 11-12 boys gold, with Jamie Harrington’s 7th place supported by the Shanney Twins, Daniel & Thomas inside the top 30, and Simon Brown, Sean Jackson & Ben Warden in the top 50.

Ingrid Deane was an impressive 11-12 girls winner, with Gemma Phillips next home in 12th. First home in the oldest boys 15-17 age group was Andrew Meech in 9th.

With four team golds there was no contest as Havering easily beat rivals Bromley for the overall team prizes
