Some fantastic individual results were the highlight of the first National Junior League fixture at Hendon on Sunday but could not prevent the team finishing in the wooden spoon place in the reformed league where men's and women's points are now combined.

The Ladies notched up five wins with the middle distance events taking pride of place.

Katie Richardson & Hayley Stibbs taking maximum points in the 1500m, as Katie controlled the race throughout and stretched her lead from the bell. Hayley rang strongly and placed third in the combined race, taking B string hours.

As in the recent Alpha Trophy Helen Roche again came from behind to win the 800m B race but this time took control with 200m and once in front was never under threat. In the A race Megan Foley went with the early pace but suffered badly over the last 300m and ended up sixth. She returned to the track under an hour later in the 3000m event, wining the B event, as Robyn Matson posted a useful sub-11m clocking for A string fourth.

The fifth and final victory came in the B high jump where Chloe van Wulven's clearance at 1.65m clinched the points. In a busy day Chloe also set PBs in the 400m hurdles, placing third, the pole vault (5th) and ran a season's best in finishing runner up in the sprint hurdles. For good measure she ran the opening leg of the sprint relay.

Bethan Siddons made an impressive junior league debut. Despite being one of the youngest competitors the 15 year old literally rose to the occasion in the high jump, adding one cm to her PB, clearing 1.65m for 2nd in the A event, matching the height of experienced winner Wendy Smith. Bethan added another PB in the triple jump, improving her best by 40cms with the 2nd best ever jump by a club U17 of 10.27m.

In the throws Emma Christmas was javelin runner up, missing out on first by just 5cms. Lauren Newton made her junior league debut, tackling three throws and placing second in the B discus. Lauren Clark was third in the A discus and newcomer Vikkie Taylor fourth in the hammer.

Six days after taking the Essex U17 title sprinter Frankie Calder took on some of the best u20 sprinters in the south and was rewarded with two season's bests. She also set an outdoor shot PB, for fourth, and anchored the relay.

Kirsty Smith added 2cms to her legal long jump PB, but could only place fifth, but failed to register a jump in the triple jump. There was misfortune too for Lisa Schofield who suffered a cramp in her hamstring 20m from the finish of the 100m, ruling her out of her hurdles speciality, 200m and relay. She is waiting to see if the injury will prevent her contesting this weekend's Essex champs.

As usual the events concluded with the 4x400m relay.  Three of the foursome that had run a fantastic sub-4m clocking at the national junior final in September were present but fastest on that day, Lucy Rodgers was using the race as a comeback to test whether she had recovered from a recent whiplash injury - she finished in agony however and now awaits more treatment. The others were Lauren Clark & Robyn Delivett, who had finished sixth and fifth in the 400m individual races, and 1500m winner Katie Richardson.

For the depleted men's side just five athletes made the trip but generally had little to show for their valiant efforts. Star billing undoubtedly goes to Ashley Reece impressed with a front running 1500m A win., his fourth event of the day after contesting the 800m, long & high jumps.  In-form Eugene Ayanful set PBs in both 100m (11.07s) & 200m (22.53s) but such is the standard at this level that he only placed fifth & sixth. The good news is that he has three more years to compete in the u20 ranks.

Anthony Williams was close to his best in his four events, but was only able to garner sixth or seventh places.  Similarly Chris Newton's sterling efforts in the four throwing events earned sixth & seventh places.

The best field events result came in the hammer when Joe Forde placed fourth, and he later added seventh in the shot.

But at the end of the day the combined team were 80 adrift of seventh placed Woodford, and have it all to do in the remaining fixtures if they are avoid losing their Premiership status.  A significantly improved showing from the club's eligible U20 & U17 males is an essential factor.
