| There was much to
brighten the gloom as a short-handed National Junior League squad again finished
last at Stevenage on Sunday & now face almost certain relegation back to
the Regional Divisions.
The ladies' track performances were impressive but in contrast the men's team were almost non-existent and registered only a token presence on the track as injuries and unwillingness to pull on a club vest left lanes empty of HMAC athletes in most races. Katie Richardson went close to the league record in winning the 1500m steeplechase slicing 8 seconds off her best in her second attempt over the barriers to win comfortably. Another A victory came by way of newcomer, 2nd claim Henrietta Sims, who won the 400m, and Lauren Clark made it a double with a B string win in the same event. Clark later was runner-up in the discus where Catrina McAuliffe was close to her best in taking B string honours in her league debut. Bethan Siddons was a good A high jump winner, equalling her PB of 1.65m while another B win was earned by Megan Foley in the 800m. Georgie Sales was close to winning the 3000m taking up the pace at half way and only being overhauled in the last 100m. Although she had to settle for 2nd she gained a new PB by almost 6 secs. Before rushing off to race, she managed a single throw in the javelin which placed her third. Another PB went to Hayley Stibbs, second in the 1500m, while Robyn Matson was also runner up in the B event. Kirsty Smith was also second in the triple jump, beaten only by Nony Mordi of Shaftesbury's league record. For the seven-strong men's squad two u17s had the main success. Bonne Buwembo bounced back from his poor English Schools showing to win the A javelin, while Cafer Gunay added a massive 10m to his PB with the senior javelin to go 4th on the club all-time u20 list. Joe Forde was third in the men's hammer. More impressive performances came from two first year U17 women in runners-up spots. Nicola Hill made a stunning debut over the senior high hurdles clocking 15.2s - the fourth fastest ever 100m hurdles time by a club athlete and 2nd fastest by an u17. And her training partner Frankie Calder carved 6-10ths off her 200m PB, to run 25.2s for 5th on the u17 all-time list, as well as a 100m PB of 12.5s. Completing the ladies squad were two third places from Helen Roche, who stepped up a string for A 800m third, and Emma Christmas in the javelin A. Although the combined squad have a mathematical chance of escaping automatic relegation that last place in the Division brings, this seems unlikely without a miracle on the men's side of the house. A great disappointment for the powerful Ladies who will lose their Premiership status after six years in the top flight, through no fault of their own. Link to Full results |
