The U20 squad just fell short of a regaining their Premier Division status when they finished fourth in a tightly contested promotion match at Lee Valley Stadium, Edmonton on Sunday. There were two A string victories. Vince Lazaro came up trumps in a close Long Jump contest with his 6.37m leap and added 100m and javelin points and ran the relay. Emma Christmas beat UK 5th ranked Dani Summers (reading) and Basildon’s 7th ranked Kim Box to claim Javelin victory in her final club competition as an U20. There were five B string victories. Vicky Smith, also in her final U20 club meeting, won a nip and tuck battle with Cambridge’s Kristy Smith to win the 800m, and added B string runners up points in the 3000m. Angela James won the B High jump and was close to her best finishing third in the pole vault. Lauren Clark scored maximum points in the B discus and was fourth in the A 400m and B 200m, as well as running the fastest club 4x400m leg. Anthony Williams added a B long & triple jump winning double, and was also third in the 110m hurdles and ran the opening sprint relay leg. Bethan Siddons added a hat trick of second places in high jump A & long & triple jumps B, Second claim member Jess Tappin was a big points scorer with A string second places in close 100H & long jump contests and was also third in the 200m and fifth in the shorter sprint. Catrina McAuliffe launched the discus beyond 30m for the first time to take A string runners up with her 30.21m PB. Georgie Sales was second in the B javelin but had to settle for fourth in the 3000m and scored points in the hammer. For the boys hard working Jay Ryan's pole vault PB gained him A string runners up & he also added a new shot PB of 11.99m to go fifth on the club all time list. He was also fifth in the high and ran in the 400m & 4x400m relay. Bradley Reece's best result was second in the A hammer, and he was also fourth in the B shot & fifth in the A discus. Lisa Schofield showed true team spirit. Despite straining her hamstring in Southern Women’s League action the day before, she took part in the 400m hurdles B race & finished fourth, as well as contributing shot points. More commendable efforts came from Katie Richardson who was 4th in the 400m B and filled a 100m B gap, and ran the4x400m relay, and Robyn Matson who signed off her junior league career with fourth place in the 1500m after placing sixth in the A 800m. Second claimer Becky Quinlan was third in the A triple jump and B 100m hurdles, and also fourth in the A 400m hurdles, and ran the opening 4x400mrelay leg. Jenny Holland stepped in at short notice to earn fourth place points in the 1500m. Joseph Ramie worked hard with third place triple jump points and raced in both sprints & the relay, Craig Moore was third in both B discus and high jump, and added 400m & relay points. John Whitehead & Daniel Winters worked hard to cover middle distance gaps with Winters taking 800m B third, Rob Jones & Grant Twist ran both 3000m & 2000m chase. Jonny Fairclough was 4th in the javelin, in the absence of Bonne Buwembo & Georgie Bean, and also scored 200m points. U17s Adam McCarthy and Kieran Nelson both improved their bests over the higher 400m hurdles. Despite excellent all round results by the team to cover gaps by absent athletes their efforts were unfortunately not quite enough, as Basildon's victories in the final three events, the steeplechase and both 4x400m relays, saw them come from behind to gain the second promotion spot behind winners Team Cambridge. |
