National Young Athletes’ League, Southern Premier Division  Barnet Copthall 17th May 2003  

After a really tough first match at Bromley, Havering Mayesbrook expected another tough encounter against previously unbeaten Shaftsbury Barnet and Enfield & Haringey.

On a blustery day not really conducive to fast times there was a close contest all afternoon. A much improved performance saw the Havering Mayesbrook squad hard on the heels of the leading two clubs throughout, and despite an impressive points score, the team finally had to settle for third overall, behind  winners, Shaftsbury Barnet and Enfield & Haringey.

The girls' dominated their section, none more so than the powerful under 17 team with the majority of girls winning their events, notching up no less than 17 first places, including six A & B string doubles.

Highlights included a fast 300m victory for Sara Luck in 42.1s, double firsts for the hurdlers, Chloe Van Wulven & Danielle Ross (80m A& B strings) & Nicola Schofield & Katie O'Sullivan (300m A&B strings) and a brave solo 3000m PB for Robyn Matson in 11m 00.1s, ably supported by Laura Moore winning the B string in 12m 20.8s.

Again many winning performances, with 15 out of a possible 21 first places. The day concluded with an excellent 51.9s sprint relay victory by Lucy Sargent, Lisa Schofield, Helen McDonnell & Lauren McVicar. Star performance of the afternoon was Lucy Sargent's 5.22m Long Jump victory, ably supported by Lisa Schofield winning the B string. Lucy also won the 100m & Lisa won the B sting Hurdles & was 2nd in the Shot Put.

There were also 7 wins by the u13 girls. Some great front running by the middle distance runners with Ingrid Deane winning the 800m in 2m30.3s & Michaela Roberts getting a PB winning the 1200m in 4m16.2s.

A stronger boys team turned in a much improved performance, although against the might of last years National Boys' Champions Enfield & Haringey, and National Finalists Shaftesbury points were always going to be hard fought.


In the u17 men's age group Terry O'Leary nearly managed three PBs in his three events. PBs of 12.58m in the Shot & 34.94m in the discus brought him 2nd places , but in the Javelin one "no throw" went sailing over 55m - almost 5 metres above his best - but unfortunately did not land correctly, so Terry had to settle for a third 2nd place with 44.22m. 

Christian Newton (B discus) and Harry Tyler (B Javelin) contributed the only winning points.

There was a busy debut gathering useful points for Michael Waller who started with 3rd in the 3000m B string, with
3rd in the 200m A string, 2nd in the B Long Jump and then a leg in the sprint relay.

For the u15s Ashley Reece had a busy day following a middle distance double winning the 800m in 2m 7.7s, 1500m in 4m 28.6 with a 3rd place in the Shot and a speedy leg in the 4x 400 m relay. Ross Clarke with a front running 3000m win was the only other victor. Vincent Lazaro managed a PB in the Long Jump with 4.87m.

Several good performances from debut boys, although the only PB was Stephen MacLachlan with 5m04.3s in the 1500m.
