Lucy
Sargent again grabbed the headlines as the combined boys’ and girl’s team
were runners up to the powerful hosts Enfield and Haringey in the first round of
the National Young Athletes League, Southern Premier fixture, on Sunday.
Lucy,
a 15 year-old Frances Bardley GCSE student from Rush Green, again showed a clean
pair of heels to the opposition with a super sprint double. She blasted to a
100m win against a strong field in a PB-equalling 12.1s, then returned to clock
24.2s, equalling the league record and improving her own club landmarks.
Her
win double was one of 16 successes recorded by the rampant under 17girls whose
performance set the girls’ squad well on the way to overall victory in their
section.
There
was a hurdles clean sweep as Chloe van Wulven took the honours in both 80m and
300m hurdles events, with Lisa Schofield again improving her PB to win the B
string sprint hurdles and Lauren McVicar’s hurdles debut winning the B 300m
hurdles race. Van Wulven made it a
trio of wins with high jump success, and Lauren Clark jumped for joy with her B
string win. The two Laurens, McVicar and Clark, both set new PBs in placing 2nd
and 1st respectively in the A & B 300m flat events, and the
latter also spun the discus to a new PB and A string victory.
Throwing partner Louise Yard secured the B discus, and also won A shot
and was B javelin runner up, while Emma Christmas went one better with a win in
the A string.
The
victory roll continued in the middle distance events as Megan Foley demolished
the 1500m field with an excellent front running display while behind her Helen
Roche came from way back with a stunning last lap to win the B category. Katie
Richardson’s 800m PB was surpassed by a superb winning run by Crawley’s Dani
Christmas, while Robyn Matson’s 3000m PB also earned her second, while there
was strong support from Rachel Gildea (80m) and Vicky Smith (3000m), returning
after a long injury lay-off to win B events.
The
final track event the sprint relay produced a slick quartet of Lisa Schofield,
Chloe van Wulven, Lucy Sargent and Lauren McVicar who ran one of the fastest
times recorded by a club u17 squad, 50.3s, just two-tenths outside the club best
set in 35 years ago.
The
u17 men also produced a strong display against the hosts with six individual
wins. Fine PB efforts from Michael
Waller (400m), David Nefs (800m), Ross Clarke (1500m), and Ashley Reece (300m)
brought four A string successes, while Jay Ryan took full points in the B
steeplechase, and Alex Van Ristell’s discus B win was the only field event
first place.
The
under15 boys also impressed with a host of PBs and five first place results. The
throwing events were a happy hunting ground as Bone Buwembo’s winning javelin
streak continued, while Bradley Reece notched up a discus-hammer-javelin PB
treble, winning the B discus. Ben Warden added shot & discus PBs, and Matt
Bloy threw the shot further than before. Bloy also came from behind with a fast
800m win, while Bradley Tungatt front ran to a new 1500m winning PB, while
behind him Joe Webster also improved his best.
Track PBs were also earned by Eugene Ayanful (200m) and Uzoma Nnajuiba
(hurdles).
The
u15 girls pulled out all the stops after late withdrawals. Hayley Thomas carved
another four seconds of her week-old PB in winning the 1500m from the gun, while
Clare Robinson was close to her best taking the B spoils. Charlotte Humphreys won the B 800m in another fast time as
Ingrid Deane was second in the A event, just outside her PB.
PB
performances were recorded by Frankie Calder (200m) Catrina McAuliffe (hurdles),
while Carla Schofield’s discus PB won her the B event.
The u13 squads found the going tough but battled all day for vital points which contributed to the overall team score. For the girls Rebecca Clements won the B 75m sprint while in the longest track race, the 1200m, Georgia Davies left the rest well behind with her winning run. There were no winning marks for the u13 boys but James McAusland set two PBs.
