There was an encouraging start to the league campaign for the combined boys' and girls' national young athletes squad when they held off hosts Medway & Maidstone to finish as runners-up to a powerful Shaftesbury Barnet team in the opening Southern Premier fixture at Hoo on Sunday.

And to cap an excellent day the Girl's Athlete of the Match Awards were both carried off by HMAC members with Bethan Siddons, winning the field award for her u15 girls' high jump victory in a new PB of 1.59m, while Lisa Schofield's 11.9s grade 1 win in the u17 80m took the track honours.

The under 15 girls led the charge with no less than 15 first place results.   There were win doubles for Siddons, who added the long jump B to her high jump victory, Nicola Hill who won both 75m hurdles  and long jump. Jessica Humpheryes, who doubled up with wins in the A discus and B javelin, and her partners were also victorious as Georgie Lou Sales won the A javelin and Carla Schofield won the discus B. Frankie Calder took both 100m and shot full points, while Louisa Wood made it a shot double, and Catrina McAuliffe won the B hurdles.

There were four win doubles from the under 17 men. On the track Eugene Ayanful and Chris Clements took top points in the 200m while training partners Anthony Williams and Richard Demko were unrivalled in the 100m hurdles. Williams made it a win double with high jump success, in which Nat Senior took B honours. Bonne Buwembo and Cafer Gunay dominated the javelin for another double. The ninth u17 win came from Matt Watkins in the 3000m.

For the under 17 women Lisa Schofield made it a hurdles double when she added 300m hurdles first place to her sprint hurdles win in a new career best.  The two Laurens, Clark and Newton, claimed a discus double win but overall in this age group there were too many gaps.

The u15 boys did well with many PBs but had few wins to reward their efforts. Matt Bloy was a double winner with A string 800m and B 400m victories and there were B string middle distance wins for Grant Twist (800m) and Joe Webster (3000m).

The youngest under 13 age group added to the squads overall success. The boys were in good form with A string track wins from Harry Picking (100m), Chris Sullivan (800m) and Jamie Buckley-Stanton (1500m) before the 4x100m quartet of Sam McDowall, Conor Mullen, Ben Western, and Harry Picking won their event.

For the u13 girls Eleanor Bounds and Emma McAuliffe again made it an 800m double and Rebecca O'Neill won the 1200m B event.

With good support from parents and officials - who received  a special "thank you" from the hosts -  the squad look forward to another good year holding their own with the best in this top quality competition.
