Despite a series of sparkling results the Havering Mayesbrook young athletes team ended up in the wooden  spoon position in their fourth round fixture at Norwich on Sunday.

Frankie Calder had set a club u15 record for the 300m earlier in the season but some doubts had remained as her performance was confused in the results with that of another athlete. But any doubts were erased when Frankie again ran 41.6s for the event for an uncontested club u15 record – and one of the fastest times by an u15 in UK. This superb performance won her female track athlete award. The powerful sprinter also won the B shot with a new career best and was 3rd in the 200m.

Lisa Schofield capped a hat trick of wins by improving her club 300m hurdles record.  The English Schools’ sprint hurdles medallist stopped the clock at a new PB of 45.1s to win easily, and went on to take maximum points in her speciality 80m hurdles and the B 300m flat – the latter in another new PB.

Matt Bloy bounced back from his disappointment at the English Schools, where he finished out of the medals in fourth in the 800m. This week he stepped up a distance to show great form in setting a new 1500m PB that took him to second on the club u15 all-time list and. He is now closing in on the Ian Chambers’ 20-year-old club record.  He was rewarded by receiving the male track athlete award

Bonne Buwembo again improved in the u17 javelin to also move up to second on the club all time list. His winning throw of 55.46m would have won silver ay last week’s English Schools – had Essex Schools selected him.

Elsewhere winning performances were limited.

In the u13 girls category Rebecca Clements returned from injury to win both 75m & 150m B string events, while A string partner Alex Edwards was 2nd in both her events, setting a new 150m PB.  Alex also notched a shot PB which won her the B string, but she was outshone by newcomer Kike Oniwinde who set a new PB for an A shot victory.  The improving Sam Hill was also an u13 winner, taking full points in the 70m hurdles.

In the other girls’ age groups there was a winning u15 hurdles double for Nicola Hill and Catrina McAuliffe, while Louisa Wood and Carla Schofield made it a discus double success.  Clare Robinson’s B 3000m victory was the only other win for the u17 women.

For the u15 boys Matt Bloy’s’ winning effort was backed up by five other wins.  Newcomer Chris Warden made an impressive winning hurdles debut with a time that ranks him 7th best all time on the club age lists. He was also runner up in the high jump and scored 200m points. Joe Webster dipped inside his PB in winning the 800m race while on the field Georgie Bean won the A javelin with a new PB while Bradley Reece was the top discus thrower on show.  Devon Samson jumped further than any B string long jumper.

In the u13 boys’ category Jordan Brown showed promise to win the B 100m race – the only u13 boys’ victory – and place second in the 200m and with improvement will soon reach the club all-time top 10 rankings.

For the u17 men there were only two wins in addition to Bonne Buwembo’s massive javelin win – and both were earned by Anthony Williams in the triple jump & high jump.

Although the defeat has pushed the squad towards the relegation zone a solid result in the last fixture at Eton on 31st should ensure another season in the Premier Division.
