A cliff-hanging afternoon’s athletics at Tonbridge on Sunday saw the
lead change hands throughout the day with the final outcome only decided
on Monday after a further scrutiny of the results. The Havering Mayesbrook squad had left believing that they
had won a two-point victory but by the time they returned across the
Thames came the news that a recount had put the hosts in pole position.
Only after several queries in the published results had been
resolved on Monday could the well-deserved verdict finally go to the
Havering Mayesbrook athletes. It was a fantastic team effort, which ensured another
year’s competition in the Southern Premier Division. The hot & humid
conditions and close competition brought out the excellent performances as
over 50 personal bests were set, and three of the four athlete of the
match awards went to Havering Mayesbrook team members. Bethan Siddons was the female field winner with her
u17 high jump victory, and she added a triple jump win close to her best.
The other female award went to Frankie Calder for her U17 300m
hurdles victory, and returned to win the sprint hurdles too and she set
the seal on a fine ladies team performance with a superb anchor leg to the
4 x 300m relay which saw her overhaul a 50m deficit within the first 100m
and go on to add a 50m lead, to bring the squad of Alex Beard, and the
Owen sisters, Becky & Charlotte to a new club record in the relatively
new event. The u17s won also 11 individual events – five A and six B
strings. The third award went
to Jake Nelson in the u13 boys high jump as he improved his Pb by a
massive 11cms. Quality performance by a club athlete went to Charlie
Smith, who marked his return from a two-month injury lay off, with winning
PBs in both sprints – his 100m time of 12.7s lifting him to fourth on
the club all-time u13 list. It
was a fabulous day all-round for the u13 boys as every A string competitor
set a PB, as did three B strings, and there were four A string wins and
two in the B. For good measure the sprint relay quartet of Harry Picking,
Smith, Fred Mokoso and Reece Stephenson closed in on the 11 year old club
record. The powerful u17 men shrugged off injuries to stars
Eugene Ayanful & Matt Bloy, to record an impressive 16 victories,
seven A strings and nine B strings. Hurdles duo David Creedon & Daniel
Loynes cleaned up, with A & B doubles in both 100m & 400m events
over the barriers, Vince Lazaro had a long jump/triple jump double, and
Cafer Gunay won both B string javelin & discus. The other age groups all notched up six wins. The u15
boys won two A events and four Bs, with Brad Burr contributing two with A
hammer & B javelin successes. The u15 girls claimed three A & B
wins apiece, with doubles in the 1500m thanks to PBs from Zoey Littlechild
& Jennifer Holland, and discus courtesy of Jessica Humpheryes and
Becky Luck. Finally, the u13 girls did well as the improving Simbiat
Salami won A 75m & B high jump in PBs, and Eleanor Bounds &
Rebecca Stanley made it a 1200m double win. Having secured their premiership status with this
superb victory, the youngsters now resume their Eastern Young Athletes
campaign this Sunday at Braintree and hope to confirm a place in the end
of season league final.
