The Young Athletes team fought back from a shaky start to finish third in their Southern Premier Division fixture at Croydon on Sunday. After trailing in last place early on a strong finish saw the team put the hosts under pressure, as Enfield & Haringey came out on top. The Under 15 girls and under 17 women both won their categories. The U17s had twelve individual victories, seven A and five B. Nicola Hill again impressed with a hurdles double, both in personal best times, and she also won the long jump with a season's best mark. Angela James won three events, taking A pole vault, and adding B string wins in 80m hurdles and in high jump - her A string partner Bethan Siddons added another first place. Becky Luck added discus victory with Carla Schofield making it a double, and Zoey Littlechild controlled the 3000m from the front. Alex Beard (1500m) and Becky Owen (300m hurdles) completed the winning dozen. The U15s gained ten wins. Kike Oniwinde, two days after improving her club javelin record in a Schools Cup event, added another comfortable victory, gaining the female field event performance of the match award. She also added B string shot full points. Rebecca O'Neill strolled to 800m success and added B javelin maximum, and Alex Edwards scored double top with a B sprint double. Sam Hill won the B hurdles and B shot and the winning tally was rounded off by a 1500m double from Eleanor Bounds and Rachel Sadler. For the U15 boys Bradley Burr's javelin win also won the boys' field athlete award, and he added a shot PB. Versatile Michael Jones powered to a 400m win and also hurled the discus for a winning PB throw. Jamie Buckley-Stanton and newcomer Terry Fairbanks won both 1500m strings and Chuks Onyieke ran well to take B 200m honours. The UI17s took advantage of the best conditions this summer to post a string of PBs but made little leeway against strong opposition from Enfield and Croydon. Grant Twist was a good winner of the steeplechase and B victories went to Daniel Winters (1500m) and Thomas Shanney (3000m). Georgie Bean and Joseph Ramie produced another javelin double, and Jordan Jackson discus PB won the B event. The young U13 squads, many of them with another year in the age group, were unable to make much impression. Second places went to Sacha Martin (high jump A) and Laura Drew (shot), while Kirsty Evans (75m) and Avril Loynes (1200m) were B string runners up. It was third places all the way for the younger boys. The second third place result confirms a better start for the team who brought up the rear in both their first two league fixtures last summer and needed a late rally to hold onto their Premier Division place. |
