The National Young Athletes team, missing almost all their key middle distance athletes, resting ahead of Monday's Essex Champs 1500m, placed third in the opening fixture at Hendon on Sunday. The U17 Men put up a power house display with six A and six B string wins. Only one point was dropped in the throws as Brad Burr and Georgie Bean took both strings of the javelin and hammer, and Laurence Goodacre this week had the upper hand over Emmanuel Quarshie in shot and discus. Jack Egar Hill won the 100m Hurdles A and 400m hurdles B, with his partner Kieran Nelson winning the A of the longer race and second in the sprint hurdles B. Gabriel Makinwa took the A triple jump and B high jump, and was second in the B long jump. More good jumps points came from runners up spots from James Lammin (B triple jump) and Kelechi Dyke (long jump). There was a massive breakthrough from Andrew Lewis in only his second 400m race who ran a swift 50.86 for second - the fourth fastest ever by a club U17. The U15 girls had a field day as they cleaned up with three throws double wins and a long jump success. There were win doubles for Sophie Baggs (discus & shot), Debbie Knight (A javelin & B shot) and Laura Drew (B javelin & discus). Nicola Peachey won the long jump and improved her hurdles PB in finishing second. Rebecca O'Neill returned from injury to place second in the 800m and her B partner Shannon Sullivan was also runner up, as was Simbiat Salami in the long jump Andrew Kerr starred for the U15 boys with two of the four victories in this age group. His PB hammer throw of 40.37 was the second best ever by a club U15 and just shy of Kevin Deacon's 10-year-old club record. Kerr also upped his pole vault PB to 2.60m. Jake Nelson and Danny Wilson made it a hurdles double, and Luke Overton was second in the B javelin, but otherwise the U15s found points hard to come by. The U13 girls, U13 boys and the U17 women only recorded one win apiece. But although wins were at a premium against the strong Shaftesbury & Bedford squads, there was no shortage of good performances and PBs in the warm conditions. For the U17 women Kike Oniwinde provide the only wins in the A shot & B triple jump but she missed a hat-trick as her three javelin efforts were all harshly ruled out. There were good hurdles points as Angela James (80mH) and Sam Hill (300mH) took second in both A races. Kelly Jarrold was second in the B longer hurdles event and was also runner up in B high jump and A triple jump. Katherine Knight added another double in A discus & B shot. For the U13 Girls Tomi Akingbade won a narrow 75m victory and was runner up in the 150, Kirsty Evans (75) and Rhiannon Long (150) were both second in the B events. Evans also won second place points in the high jump and Rosie Brett was second in the B shot. Lee Jarrold contributed the only victory for the U13 boys with his high jump success. He was also second in the B 100m, and Jason Akwenuke (200), and the 1500 pair of Nicholas Shade and Jordan Fox were also runners up. The second round fixture in this league is in two weeks (18th) at Basildon where HMAC team managers will be looking for a much stronger turn out. |
