The National Young Athletes team went down fighting as they lost their Premiership status after again bringing up the rear in their sixth and final league fixture at Southampton on Sunday.

Yet another club record was broken as Kike Oniwinde set new club U17 and U20 javelin marks when she threw beyond the 40m barrier for the first time, adding over two metres to her PB with her 40.44m throw in the under 17  event. Only Louise Mathews and Emma Christmas have thrown further among club females. Kike also improved her shot PB to 9.86m to win that event also and placed second in the B triple jump. Kelly Jarrold set a new career best of 9.60m in winning the A triple jump, taking her into the club all time top 10 for U17s.  The reliable Angela James had two wins in this age group – her high jump PB of 1.56m taking the A honours and her javelin throw of 27.38m winning the B. She also equalled her hurdles best. Amy Cox was victorious in the U17 hammer and Lydia St Ange improved her 100m PB.

The under 15 girls recorded seven wins. Nicola Peachey and Holly Thomas notched up a double double! Both clocked hurdles PBs to win A & B strings and they also scored top points in the A & B long jump. Sophie Baggs and Shelley Wilson added another double in the discus and Deborah Knight won the B shot. New PBs went to Lucy Allen (10 & 200), Rebecca O’Neill (800m) the 1500m pairing of Rachel Sadler & Sharmila Golan and Sophie Baggs again in the shot.

The under 17 men  were not as dominant as usual but still came away with eight wins – four A and four B. Jack Edgar-~Hill and Brad Burr both set PBs on the way to A & B hurdles victories and Burr again and newcomer George Fenn also made it a javelin double.  Fenn also was top B string in the shot while Gabriel Makinwa (triple jump) and Lewis Williams (hammer) both won their events. Adam McCarthy won the B pole vault as Brad Burr again cleared a useful 2.80m in his first meeting at the event for the club.

English Schools champion Jimi Tele returned to club action win good wins in both under 15 boys 100m and long jump – his triple jump speciality is not contested in this league.  His 11.4 secs 100m clocking takes him to equal second on the club all-time lists – a fraction away from Andrew Bartlett’s 11.36s club record from 2001. Tele also won the long jump with 5.82m. Rhys Stevenson’s 12.0s PB was good enough to secure 100m B honours and Andrew Kerr’s hammer victory provided the only other win for the U15s. Michael Lewis (200m) and Ryan O’Mahoney (1500m) ran faster than before.

George Perkins’ long jump victory in a PB of 4.61m was the only A string win for the under 13 boys with Alex Law winning the long jump B and Finbar Smyth taking the B high jump.  The six strong squad did their best to cover for absent colleagues.

That option wasn’t available to the gallant under 13 girls duo of Sacha Martin and Jess Fazakerly who each contested their maximum three events but needed two team mates more to make up a relay team and at least another four others to cover all the events. The fact that only two of the 20 or so u13 girls who have represented the club in league competition this year made the trip to the south coast just about sums up the squad’s season.

The last place finish – the squad’s third in five league fixtures – means that they will slip into Southern Division One East next campaign.
