National Young Athletes’ League, Barnet Copthall 5^th May 2002

The under 17 boys travelled to Shaftesbury Barnet’s home ground for the first National Young Athletes League meeting of the season on Sunday. On a cold and blustery day, we were up against some good opposition, so would have to be at are best to do well.  With a seriously depleted team, the boys were a credit to the club, and finished in a creditable 3^rd place.  

Many of the boys, although not winners on the day, excelled in achieving personal bests, some even gaining two.  These were David Creedon, Nat Senior, Bradley Falco, Erol Karabalik (2), Christian Newton (2), Aaron Churchouse (2), Ashley Roberts (2), Danny Skelt and Martyn Chambers.

In the under 13s, there were wins for Matthew Watkins (A) and Paul Adair (B) in the 800m, Vincent Lazaro (B) in the Long Jump, Ricky Payne (B) in the shot and the 4x100m relay team of Paul Adair, David Creedon, Bradley Falco and Vincent Lazaro.

In the under 15s, Daniel O’Connell and Andrew Luck each had two wins apiece. Daniel had wins in the 200m (B) and the High Jump (B) whilst Andrew's success came in the 80m Hurdles (A) and 800m (B).  Other winners in this age group came from Anthony Williams in the Long Jump (B), Harry Tyler (A) in the Javelin, James Gregory (A) in the 100m and Matthew Jones (B) in the 80m Hurdles. 

For the under 17’s, there were wins from Mark Connelly (B) in the High Jump, Peter Phillips (A) in the 400m, Terry O’Leary (A) in the Discus, and Scott Keating (A) in the Triple Jump. 

At the end of a very busy day, with very few under 17’s fit enough to race, a very impromptu team of Peter Phillips, Danny Skelt, Rob Howe and Andrew Meech gave their all and had a tremendous win in the 4 x 400m relay.

In all, it was a great team effort.  I am sure that the boys will go on to even achieve better success in the following rounds.  The final match results are as follows.
