National Young Athletes’ League, Croydon 30^th June 2002

The Under 17 boy’s team travelled to Croydon for their latest league fixture. Against some good opposition it should have been a closely fought contest, but our chances were once again seriously affected by the lack of under 17 boys. We needed to do well at this league fixture to bring the team out of the relegation zone, but with only 5 boy’s in the under 17 age group available to compete, the team trailed throughout the contest and had to be content with fourth position. The meeting was eventually won by Medway & Maidstone, with Milton Keynes in 2^nd and Bournemouth in 3^rd.

Despite the final outcome, the boys competed well with many individual wins and PB’s on the day.

For the under 13’s, there were wins for Nat Senior (A) and Vincent Lazaro (B) in the Long Jump and Paul Adair in the 800m.

For the under 15’s, both Ashley Reece and Daniel O’Connell were in tremendous form and both gained a hat trick of individual wins. Ashley gained wins in the 800m(A), High Jump (B) and 1500m, whilst setting a new PB in that event. Daniel gained wins in the 100m(A), 200m (A) and High Jump (A), in which he equalled his PB. Daniel later combined with Christian Newton, Erol Karabalik and David Nefs to win a closely contested 4x100m relay.

Other winners in this age group were, Christian Newton (B) in the Shot, Marc Stearne (B) in the Discus, David Nefs in the 400m and Paul Andrews (B) in the 3000m.

For the under 17’s, there were individual wins for Joe Golding (A) and Andrew Meech (B) in the 800m. Joe and Andrew later combined with Rob Howe and Andrew Bartlett to win the 4 x 400m relay.

Despite the overall match result there were some good individual performances, with many of the boys, although not winners on the day, achieving personal bests. These were Ashley Roberts (3000m), Mark Connelly (Long Jump) and Erol Karabalik (200m).
