National Cross Country Championships – Bristol - Saturday 23 February 2002

Faye Fullerton gave a battling display in appalling weather to place fourth against older opposition in the Under 20 race in the National Cross Country Championships at Bristol yesterday

With the race conducted under English Cross Country association rules, which allow athletes outside the International U20 age-group categories, the Upminster 17-year old gave a fright to Emma Ward, 20. Faye followed Emma Ward's early pace and the older athlete tried to shake her off and later suffered for her efforts. Only in the last half mile did Faye fall off the pace as her efforts in the windy and showery conditions took their toll as first Jane Potter (Charnwood) - the eventual winner - and then local Bristol girl Kate Reed came past, as Faye held on to fourth. There was an improved performance from Lauren Deadman who placed 21st, compared to 31st at the Inter Counties two weeks earlier.

The Under 15 Girls were just outside the medals, placing fourth. Megan Foley (15th) and Sara Luck (17th) both made the top 20 with Robyn Matson (83rd) and Vicky Smith (95th) completing the scorers, missing out on bronze by 22 points. Robyn Delivett and Carmel Munson also competed.

Faye Fullerton (#17) placed 4th in National U20 race,

with Lauren Deadman (#18) in 21st

The U17 men placing 12th were the only other compete team, with Andrew Hunter (82nd) and Martin Heys (88th) making the top 100, with Tom Bond (119th) and Darryl Rogers (140th) completing the scoring quartet.  Katie Richardson (33rd) headed an incomplete U13 girls' squad with Clare Robinson (118th) and Hayley Thomas (122nd) gaining their first taste of National action.

Four senior men completed the course but with six to score they failed to figure in the team stakes. Graham Pritchard (242nd) and Rob Dickenson (289th) were best placed as Rob Warner and Tony Collins also competed in the 1000-strong field.

Following Debbie Sullivan's late withdrawal through injury super-vet Lesley Felton in 136th was the only senior women to take part.
