In the first competition of the season in the newly formed Southern Athletics League, Havering Mayesbrook’s senior athletes – with some excellent help from the junior ranks – achieved a hard fought success on Saturday at Sutcliffe Park in South London.

Trailing by some 30 points at the half-way stage, the Hornchurch Stadium based athletes produced a storming finish to take a narrow lead going into the final relays, holding on for a fine victory over Vale of Aylesbury, Cambridge Harriers and Biggleswade.

In hot and windy conditions, there were some excellent individual results and some fine examples of teamwork from the women. Ever reliable Kate Cowley leapt to 1.70m to win the High Jump (her best for some time) and took 2nd place in the 100m, Pole Vault and Shot Putt events.

There was an excellent string 3000m win for Ingrid Deame with ‘B’ string wins for Zoe Young in the Shot Putt and Javelin, and returning Melissa Felton in the Discus. Young also finished 2nd in the ‘B’ 100m and the ‘A’ Long Jump. In the 1500m, Hayley Stibbs another athlete returning to competition, ran well for 2nd place whilst newcomer Ellie Hopley provided valuable points in the 200m and 800m.

The under-20s also had a successful competition with ‘A’ string wins for Felicity Clarke (100m Hurdles), Gemma Phillips (3000m), Ellie Watson with a new personal best in the Triple Jump, and Kike Oniwinde (Javelin). Watson also took the ‘B’ Long Jump and was 2nd in the ‘B’ High Jump.

In addition to her sprint hurdles success, Flic Clarke had a splendid afternoon with a series of fine performances – 2nd in the ‘A’ 200m with a new best time, 2nd in the 400m Hurdles and strong sprinting in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

It was also good to see Lauren Clark back in the club vest and she didn’t disappoint with a good win in the discus, following up with extremely encouraging runs in both relays.

The 4x100m squad of Clarke, Watson, Clark and Cowley ran a good 2nd as did the 4x400m quartet of Clark, Phillips, Clarke and Deane.

The men also put in a solid team performance. There was ‘A’ string success for Matt Bland (5000m), Adam McCarthy (400m Hurdles), Rob Warner (2000m Steeplechase), Jeremy Watson (High Jump), veteran Stuart Tufton (Pole Vault), Anthony Williams (Long Jump), Leo Barker (Shot Putt) and Sam Harrison (Javelin).

‘B’ string wins came from Grant Twist (2000m Steeplechase), Jake Nelson (under-20) in the High Jump, and Aaron Bonning with a terrific trio of successes in the Pole Vault, Long Jump and Javelin.

In the sprints, Ammad Masood ran well for 2nd in the 100m and 3rd in the 200m. In the one-lap 400m event, Simon Richards and Jonathan Seekings provided valuable points. There were also runner-up slots in the ‘A’ and ‘B’ 800m through Neill Collins and Anthony Soar. In the 1500m, Grant Twist also finished 2nd whilst Ross Earney, making his senior debut, ran well for 3rd in the ‘B’ race.

More runner-up performances came in the 100m Hurdles through Watson and  Bonning, the 400m Hurdles via Seekings, Watson and Bonning again in the Triple Jump and Darren Keevil in the ‘B’ Shot Putt and Discus events. The tireless Bonning and Keevil also provided essential points in the Hammer event.

All in all, a splendid team performance that bodes well at this level for the remainder of the season. The next match is at Swindon on May 21st.
