The Southern League Team finished third after losing out in a close three-way battle for the top places in their second match at Stevenage on Saturday.

The ladies piled up the points with wins in nine A strings, six B strings & the sprint relay. Vicky Smith shrugged off an injury to notch two wins and a second place, winning the 800m and steeplechase, going close to her best, and was second in the 1500m. There was a clean sweep in the hurdles as Claire Brennan and Flic Clarke won A & B 400m hurdles, before Chloe van Wulven & Brennan again won both sprint hurdles. Kate Cowley won both pole vault & triple jump A and made it a hat-trick with B javelin victory. There were jumps victories as Hannah Connor’s good form continued with Long jump A victory and second in the 100m, Tina Quinlivan won the B vault on her league debut and Katie O’Sullivan returned to club colours after a seven-year break to win the B high jump – with her mum Ruth, scoring points in the B 3000m – Ingrid Deane was second in the A 3000m.

The throwing events also produced a strong crop of wins. Under 17 Georgie Taylor conquered her senior opponents with a discus win while Rachel Forder was second in both shot and B discus.  Debbie Knight added over three metres to her best in winning the javelin and Nina Brennan was the B shot winner and was second in the B hammer. Aisha Kamara and Thiziri Dendani – both Under 17s – completed the line up with sprints points.

The men faced strong opposition and welcomed back some familiar faces. Anthony Williams opened his 2012 campaign with victory in the triple jump and runners up spots in both sprint hurdles and long jump. Grant Twist returned to club action with a 3000m PB in second and set another new best in winning the B ‘chase, with Rob Warner clocking one of his fastest times in talking the A honours, while Trevor Keys returned to the track after several years away with third in the 1500m. Club Chairman Chris Smith was third in the 3000m B and team manager Kevin White third in the B hammer.

Paul Adair’s PB in the 800m placed him second while other second places were earned by javelin thrower Patrick Lear, Richard Holland (Long jump B), and Danny Wilson in the B discus and Darron Keevil had his usual busy day tackling five events with his best points coming with second in the B javelin.  Neill Collins was third in the 800m and Phil Groombridge third in the B shot.

Under 20s made up the rest of the team who fought hard for points with Massi Dendani’s 400m (PB), Jon Seekings (400m & 400m hurdles), Vulkan Isikgun (100m B), Adam Wileman (400m hurdles) and Jake Nelson ( high jump & triple jump) giving their best
