The Southern League team were edged out in a three-way battle in their match at Harrow on Saturday, finishing joint second behind the hosts four points behind Worthing. Both teams were runners up - the ladies finishing just three points behind Worthing, with the men 13 points shy of Harrow. Ever-reliable Vicky Smith again starred for the ladies with a hat trick of wins in the 800m, 1500m & steeplechase before running the fastest 4x400m relay split. Chloe van Wulven won the sprint hurdles A string, with Claire Brennan taking the B string honours, and had earlier won the B string 400m hurdles. Claire was second in the A sprint hurdles and also adding B high jump victory. Bethan Siddons was second in the A high jump, and also set a new triple jump PB for third. Georgie Taylor & Rachel Forder won A & B string discus and were both second in the shot. More field events second places came from Ellie Watson (B triple jump), Tina Quinlivan (pole vault) and Emma Christmas (javelin). Nina Brennan returned from injury for second in the B 400m and veteran Ruth O'Sullivan earned B string second place points in both 800m & 1500m. Rachel Kerr added to the points totals with her 100m & 200m performances. The men turned in a good team display. Adam McCarthy made a winning return from an injury lay-off in the 400m hurdles and Adam Wileman made it a double win with a season's best in the B string. Rob Warner and veteran Paul Berrett also completed a double in the steeplechase and Grant Twist won the 3000m, and was second in the 1500m, less than 24 hours after lifting the county 3000m title. It was second places all the way as Ian Anthony (B 3000m), Josh Conners (800m & 1500m B), Massi Dendani (400m & 800m) and Richard Holland (100m) all contributed runners-up points on the track. It was a similar story in the field. Busy Arron Bonning was the only clubman to take full points, winning the B vault, backed up by second in the discus & javelin B, and third in the B hurdles and hammer but there were second places galore from Stuart Tufton (A vault), Jeremy Watson (High Jump A & triple jump B), Anthony Williams (long & triple jumps A), Sam Harrison (javelin - close to his season's best) and Richard Holland with a season's best in the B long jump. Under 20s Volkan Isikgun (100m) & Jon Seekings (400m) completed the men's roster. The result put the squad in mid-table and, with just the final fixture at Norwich on 1 September to come, another season in the top flight seems more or less assured. |
