Despite some promising individual results the men's & women's Southern League squads were pushed into last place in their opening Division 1 fixture at Lee Valley on Saturday.

The men had seven individual wins with three A string and four B string victories. George Hadler got the squad off to a flying start on the track by comfortably winning the 400m Hurdles and also tackled the senior 110m hurdles for the first time in third and ran both relays. His B string 400m hurdles partner Jeremy Watson was edged into second on what proved a  busy day as he set out his stall to defending his Team member of the year award from last season, also contesting the 110m hurdles, long jump, triple jump and 400m relay.

Josh Olawore found a modest long jump – by his standards – enough for victory and added points in the 200m, high jump & discus and sprint relay. Ed Thompson won the pole vault and his B string partner Phil Groombridge took the B vault honours too. Sam Harrison had his best season’s opener for several years to win the B javelin, with his protégé Pat Lear second in the A while Jake Nelson took full points in the B triple jump. Danny Wilson improved his best with the senior discus & added hammer points.

Points were harder to come by on the track but Ian Anthony ran well for a B 5000m win just behind Matt Bland who claimed third in the A. The ‘chase brought a pair of runners up placings for stalwart Rob Warner & Paul Grange who returned to club track action after several years away, also scoring in the 800m, filling a 4x400m slot & attempting the 110m high hurdles. Hurdler Robbie Clarricoats concentrated on the track and carved a chunk off his 400m.best in third with Massi Dendani second in the B.  Paul Kavanagh made his club debut in the 1500m with Anthony Soar filling the B string, after also competing in the 800m.

The ladies team were short-handed and had to settle for five wins were against strong opposition. There were winning doubles in the javelin where Louise Lockwood took the A in a new career best - winning her the Athlete of the Match award - and Debbie Knight’s season’s best won the B plaudits, and Under 17 discus throwers Georgie Taylor & Rachel Forder once again won both A & B. Georgie improved her 400m best again and scored in the shot.  Another U17 Chenice Constable marked her league debut with a high jump B victory and scored well in her other events.

Gemma Phillips sliced five seconds off her 3000m best placing second and Mercy Gutteridge won another second place in the pole vault. Flic Clarke returned to form with second places in both hurdles events and added 200m points and contested both relays as did Claire Brennan who was third in both hurdles A strings.

Katie O’Sullivan improved her 400m best and was third in the high jump, and there were also third places for Ellie Watson & Emma Christmas in the B string triple jump & hammer respectively. Completing the line-p were Josie Lane (800m) and Laura Drew (hammer) while Sophie Baggs improved her best in the non scoring discus.
