Senior athletics returned to Hornchurch Stadium in style as the men's & women's Southern League squad beat off strong challenges to win the first senior fixture to be held at the Stadium since July 1991.

A strong ladies squad notched up 13 wins to set up the victory. Flic Clarke set the ball rolling with a PB in winning the first race the 400m hurdles, with Claire Brennan taking the B and Brennan later partnered Chloe van Wulven to a sprint hurdles double and also set a new pole vault best in second, with Chloe winning the B high jump.  In the A high jump Bethan Siddons' remarkable improvement this year continued when she added another three cms to her PB, to claim a share of the club record, which she now aims to make her own.

Lauren Deadman almost lapped the field in winning the 3000m and behind her Gemma Phillips set a new career best in taking B string victory. Another middle distance win came from the industrious Vicky Smith who won the 800m B, with Sarah Wilson second in the A and Vicky was second in the 1500m and third in the chase, with Bella Woods marking her 'chase debut with a B string win. Claire Davies was third in the 1500m B on her league debut.

Rachel Forder and Sophie Baggs added another winning double in the discus as did javelin throwers Emma Christmas and Debbie Knight, with Debbie also throwing a new shot PB in second and Emma improving her 100m best and scoring in the hammer. Michelle Hughes was second in both her events the 200m & long jump, and Zoe Young's seasons best placed her third in the long jump A. More runners up spots were gained by Nina Olatunbosun in the 100m (PB) and Leanne Butler in the pole vault.

Ellie Watson was third in the triple jump and jogged round to score in the 400m as did injured Rachel Kerr, after competing her field events officiating duties and Nina Brennan's third place points in shot & javelin boosted the points tally. Lucy Bailey joined Debbie, Chloe and Emma in the third placed sprint relay squad on her debut and Michelle, Chloe Sarah and Flic posted a fast time for second in the 4x400m relay.

The men weren't quite so dominant but had their fair share of success. Josh Olawore took a break from his A levels to win both the long jump and 200m and contribute the fastest  4x400m leg,   His long jump partner Alex Law added B string victory and was third in the high jump and John Adekoya made it a 200m maximum with B victory and set PBs in high & triple jumps too.

Jack Edgar-Hill and Jeremy Watson took full points in the sprint hurdles and both added 400m points and Jeremy scored in tripe jump & 400m

Rob Warner and Jason Lendon won both A & B string chase, clocking their best ever times at the shorter 2000m event.   Hoseah Gikungu raced on the track for the first time this summer and showed he is in good form with a 1500m PB in second. His evergreen B string partner Matt Bland has reasons to remember the last time a senior meeting was held at the track - on 20 July 1991, before many of the squad had been born, as he set his 1500m PB on that occasion in a British Athletics League fixture.  Another one of the "golden oldies" who in the Havering squad that day 22 years ago was Mark Bishop who scored well in shot, discus & pole vault and set a club 45+ long jump best. Paul Berrett was another vet who worked hard to mark his mark on the club bests in the 50+ age group, setting a new 400m hurdles best as a non-scorer and also tackled the javelin & 'chase.

The younger vets also put up a god show with M40 Steve Rand leading home a club quartet in the 5000m with Ian Anthony second in the B, and M35 Arron Bonning scoring in the pole vault, javelin & hammer.  Paul Grange & Paul Kavanagh battled well for points in the 800m & 400m.

The younger contingent also played their part as Emanuel Quarshie was second in the shot and B discus & third in the hammer while sprinters Volkan Isikgun and debutant Patrick Chimhini did well.

The welcome win eased the squad's relegation concerns and lifted them to tenth in the 16 team table, but only two points shy of third and last place in a very competitive division, with two fixtures remaining.
