Despite some excellent individual results – including two club Under 20 pole vault records – the men's & women's Southern League squads were pushed into last place in their opening Division 1 fixture at Norwich on Saturday.

Ed Thompson’s rapid improvement continued when he added 20 cms to his previous best to win the pole vault with a clearance of 4.40m to claim outright the club under 20 record, which he had shared with two others.  It was also an English School’s qualifying performance and brings Ed’s improvement to an impressive 68cms since last summer.

Another U20 Duane Jibunoh marked his club debut with PBs in shot, discus & javelin winning two events and placing second in the other.  Duane’s winning shot & discus performances with the senior implements both took him to second on the club’s all-time U20 lists in those events.   His coach Sam Harrison added maximum points with B javelin victory.   More good points came in the sprint hurdles where George Hadler’s PB secured runners’ up spot and Jeremy Watson took the B string.   Hadler also improved his 400m best and added 200m points and Watson filled gaps in the 400m hurdles, pole vault & hammer.

Runners up spots also went to Karl Tucker in the B 200m with a new career best to add to his 100m best, Richard Holland in both long jump  B 100m, and John Adekoya triple jump. Under 17 Michael Duncan added new PBs in both 400m & discus.  Important middle distance points were gained by Paul Kavanagh (800m),  Matt Bland 5000m & B 800m, Martin Chester (5000m & ‘chase), and the returning Chris Coates & Gavin Maley (1500m).

Mercy Gutteridge also added a club U20 pole vault improving her own mark by 10cms to 3.20m to win the competition.  Only Kate Cowley (3.90m) has vaulted higher among club females.  Another impressive performance by an U20 came from Rachel Forder whose winning discus PB of 44.50m, edged out Georgie Taylor (who won the B string with a season’ s best) and took Rachel to third on the Club all-time list.  Louise Lockwood took javelin honours and another field win came from Bethan Siddons in the high jump, and second in the triple jump, with U17 Chenice Constable making it a double victory in the high jump B and also winning the B long jump.

Other U17s did well for the cause as Modupe Shokunbi won the 100m and Louise Lear the B triple jump, and Michelle Hughes was second in the B javelin and third in both sprints. Another U17 Ella Jolly marked her league debut with a PB in the 1500m and Any Baggs improved her season’s best in the 800m.

The seniors also worked hard to fill the gaps with Claire Brennan third in both hurdles and joining U17s Chenice, Michelle & Modupe in the winning sprint relay quartet.  Zoe Young opened her account in the long jump & shot, while Nina Brennan returned to the track in the 400m and added hammer points, with Ellie Watson & Rachel Kerr also adding much needed points.
