The Southern League squad produced an excellent display in finishing runners up in their final league match at Portsmouth on Saturday but their valiant efforts were not enough to keep their Division 1 place.

The ladies' contingent gave another strong performance in recording nine individual victories and a dozen runners up spots.  Tayla Humm contributed three wins with a strong run to win the 400m A event and adding B string victories in both 100m & 200m sprints, the latter equalling her best, while Modupe Shokunbi won the 200m A race. Lydia Hallam smashed her 3000m best for victory and her time took her into the club all time U20 top 10 and she also added 1500m runners up points and the fastest 4x400m relay leg.

Claire Brennan and Bella Woods had started the day well with a double win in the 400m hurdles and both added more important points as Claire placed second in the sprint hurdles and B high jump, and Bella set a new PB for second in the steeplechase. Vicky Smith again defied injury to add B string wins in both 3000m & steeplechase and was second in the 800m, while Clare Davies also second in the B 800m and Sarah Wilson was another track runner up in the 1500m B.

Louise Lockwood provided the only field event victory in the javelin with Zoe Young second in the B, and Louise was also second in the shot while Zoe also scored in the long jump.  More second places went to Bethan Siddons in the high jump, plus triple jump and long jump points, and the discus pairing of Freya Gutteridge & Nina Brennan also were both second and added hammer points.

The men had to face stiff opposition but still produced some fine results. Rob Warner and Ian Anthony took full points in the 5000m A & B strings held in blustery conditions and Ian was runner up in the B 1500m and Rob added points in the 'chase & 400m hurdles. Billy Rungay won the B 800m with Paul Kavanagh was second in the A and also set a new 400m PB while veteran Martin Chester was another runner up in the B 'chase. John Adekoya was second in the B 100m and added triple jump points, Nathan Steele improved his 200m best, Jamie Buckley-Stanton completed the track roster in the 1500m, while Sydney Conteh made his league debut in the 4x400m relay.

Anthony Williams set season's bests in both the triple jump, finishing second & the sprint hurdles and Karl Tucker was second in his first senior hurdles race and also added 200m & 400m hurdles points. Alex Law was second in the long jump with his furthest jump since coming back from injury and added pole vault, high jump & discus points, while Richard Holland was also runner up in the B long jump. More important field events points came from all-rounder Arron Bonning (pole vault, shot, hammer & discus), and Craig Lacy (javelin & hammer).

The fine result lifted the club from 15th to 13th in the final table but with four teams relegated they fell one point short of safety and will compete in Division 1N next season. Despite beating league champions Brighton in their home fixture and having a higher points score than several clubs above them the squad lost out due to placing last in three of the five fixtures.
