Some fine individual performances came to nothing as gaps in several events cost the Southern League squad dear in their first match of the season at Ipswich on Saturday.

The ladies recorded an impressive 13 victories but suffered badly without any runners in the middle distance events. Chloe Van Wulven notched up a hat-trick of wins with a fine sprint hurdles victory, as well as B string wins in both high jump and 400m hurdles. Win doubles were also provided by sprint star Modupe Shokunbi in both 100m & 200m, vaulter Tee Quinlivan who also added B 400m victory, and Georgie Taylor who showed she is back to her best with her third longest ever discus throw and a shot PB for wins in both. Emma Christmas & Alice Martin won both javelin strings, Bethan Siddons took the A high jump, as well as improving her long jump best, and Lucy Bailey's hurdles PB brought her a B string win. Tayla Humm was runner up in both 200m & 400ms and Claire Brennan was second in the 400m hurdles, while Nina Brennan was second in the B discus.  Lucy, Chloe, Tayla & Modupe combined for second place in the sprint relay.

The men's squad added a further seven wins. Alex Law won the long jump and B javelin, the latter in a new career best, and Ed Thompson made a welcome return from injury to win the vault, with the ever-busy Arron Bonning adding B vault victory, as well as points in three other events. Richard Holland added B string long jump full points.

On the track Rob Warner was closed to his career best for 5000m victory and added 'chase second place, while Paul Grange took the A 800m honours, as well as 1500m runners up. Lewis Bailey set a new 200m PB in second, while other second places were gained by Brad West (1500m B) and javelin thrower Sam Harrison, who also improved his long standing hammer best. Third place points were gleaned by Paul Kavanagh (400m & 800m) Wolex Coker (100m) while the younger contingent rose to the opportunity to compete against senior opposition as Matt Owers improved his 400m PB, and Ed Brinton-Quinn, Shandell Taylor & Sydney Coker all added third places.

Team managers Kevin White (who covered a discus gap) & Irene Brennan will hope to call on larger squads for their second fixture at Ashford at the end of May.
