A second place finish at Battersea on Saturday behind the promoted Norwich brought down the curtain on the 2017 season for Havering’s senior Southern League team.

The ladies team chalked up 13 wins and a dozen runners up. Club Vice Chair Claire Brennan led by example with wins in both A hurdles events, and the B shot & discus, backed up by runners up placings in the long jump and javelin, as well as running a leg in the winning sprint relay team. Lydia Hallam had an untroubled win double in the 1500m & 3000m, and Bethan Siddons also doubled up for full points in the high and triple jump events, as Katie Dawson added high jump B victory to her runners up points in the 200m & 400m.

Tina Quinlivan successfully returned from injury to win the pole vault and set a new outdoor career best and club W40 record as Nina Brennan won the B as well as adding points in 400m, discus and hammer. Another field event victory came from Elysha Thatcher-Gray in the shot to add to her B javelin and hammer points.

Clare Davies was busy on the track tackling the 800m, 1500m and 3000m, for two second and a third place, and Abi Shipton (100m & 200m), Rachel Akinola (100m B) and Omesiri Akpotor (long jump) also added second places. Katie, Rachel, Claire and Abi won the sprint relay and Amy Baggs, Clare Davies, Nina and Katie were second in the 4x400m event. Steeplechaser Emily James completed the ladies’ line up.

The men’s team suffered due to the BAL match the next day but were still able to call on six of the squad who competed at Rugby the following day. One of these Shandell Taylor had a trio of wins in the long jump, triple jump and B high jump, while another Duane Jibunoh won the discus and was second in the shot and javelin. Rugby-bound Timi Kuye warmed up with a B string 100m victory and second place in the 200m, both in season’s bests and Fraser Boston improved his 400m best to win the B.

Ayo Akingbehin (100m), Josh Ajibawo (200m) and Matthew Agnimel (400m) all placed third and James Stewart (800m & 1500m), Luke Soulsby (800m B) and the 5000m pair of Euan Harlow and Graham Hogan added more track points for the cause.

Nathanael Adeniran, just 15, won the high jump and Tobi Idowu second in the long jump, while Stuart Tufton, 50 years their senior, won the B vault. Michael Duncan was kept busy contesting three throws and the 4x400m relay, recording three individual second places and one third. Another veteran Arron Bonning won the B triple jump and added pole vault and hammer points.
