South of England Indoor Championships, Lee Valley, 11th & 12th January 2020

Club athletes took home four medals as the South of England Championships for Under13s, Under 15s and Under 17s kick-started the indoor season.

Stephanie Okoro took pride of place as she took Under 15 Girls 300m gold in her first competitive races at the event. After a heat win in a relaxed 42.39s Stephanie powered home in the last 100m of the final to clock a personal best of 41.74s, to win by almost a second.  The South of England pentathlon champion had earlier placed fifth in the long jump.

There were silver medals in the 60m hurdles events on Saturday. Paris King improved her club Under 15 record to 9.21s in winning her semi final after winning her heat but she had to come from behind in the final under an hour later to claim silver in 9.25s. She was joined on the podium by Jacob Blanc who stepped up into the Under 17 age group in style, winning his hurdles heat in a swift 8.31s before being edged into silver in the final with an even faster 8.23s, not far short of the 8.17s club record which looks likely to be broken later in the indoor season. Jacob also made his 400m debut on Sunday posting a fine 53.35s to earn a final place but opted not to run as he was feeling unwell.

The fourth club medal went to rising star Al-Ameen Salaam who won Under 15 shot bronze with his first round 10.83m put. He would have added to the tally in the 200m after crossing line in bronze position only to be disqualified for a lane infringement.
