| Faye Fullerton won the South of England Junior
1500m championship at Watford on Saturday demolished a good quality field
to finish over five seconds clear in a new personal best of 4m 25.3 secs.
And not to be outdone, Lauren Deadman placed sixth taking four
seconds off her best time. Both girls are only 17 and have two more years
in the under 20 age category. Deadman later qualified for the 800m
final in a new PB.
In the equivalent event for Under 15 girls Charlotte Watkins took advantage of the absence of the usual club top two Sara Luck and Megan Foley to improve her own best and record an English Schools qualifying time to claim a final place. In the final she ran a storming race, taking on Aldershot stars Charlotte Browning and Leonie Smith, and was in contention for a medal until the last hundred metres, finishing fifth in another new PB. In the field events there were silver medals for Steve Prady in the Under 17 High Jump, and Terry O'Leary in the U15 Javelin. O'Leary almost added a further medal in the shot where he finished fourth in a new PB of 12.33m, just 4 cms off third. Lynsey Clark also came close to a medal, finishing fourth. She was lying second up to the final round but agonisingly one and then another opponent overtook her for a medal place. Kevin Deacon in the junior men's hammer was another club thrower to place fourth. Nicola Schofield was another finalist, placing fifth in the U15 girls' 200m in a new PB and English Schools qualifying time of 26.1 secs. Another final place came in the boys' U15 800m where Danny Skelt qualified for the final as fastest loser, where he placed an excellent fifth in a PB and of 2m 09.26 secs. Sarah Deacon improved both her discus and hammer bests in the under 20 event, as did Nina Brennan in the Under 17 300m hurdles. |
