South of England AA Under 20 Championships - Watford 25th - 26th May 2002

Havering Mayesbrook's talented youngsters mixed it with the best as they took part in the rain-affected South of England Championships at Watford on Saturday and Sunday. Some good performances were topped by five medals - two of the gold variety.

Lauren Deadman showed her class with a controlled win in the under 20 women's 1500m event. After a comfortable heat win on Saturday she followed up with a superb victory in Sunday's final, taking three seconds off her personal best with a time of 4m 32.32 secs.

Sara Luck also impressed in winning the under 17 women's 800m, gaining revenge on rival Linzi Snow who finished out of the medals. Sara tracked the Woodford girl and went past with 200m to go to come home in front, but missed her PB by just one-hundredth of a second clocking 2m 14.53 secs.

Steve Prady - second last year in the U17 age group - again struck silver in the under 20 men's high jump with a 1.75m clearance. Mel Harrison also came home with silver as her 30.77m hammer effort secured runners up spot in the under 17 hammer event.

Another to make the medal podium was the improving Chloe Van Wulven who hurdled to a superb bronze in the under 15 girls' 75m hurdles event in a new personal best of 11.70 secs in her first major championship.

Other club members finished just outside the medals. Kevin Deacon exceeded his own club hammer record three times as he hurled the 6kg implement to 48.49m, but was one place off a medal in the under 20 men's event. His older sister Sarah almost had her hands on a medal in the equivalent hammer event for u20 women. She was in third place, just one centimetre ahead of Ashford's Sarah Dobriskey, when the Kent athlete unleashed a better final round throw, relegating Sarah to fourth. Sarah had earlier placed seventh in the discus event.

Also finishing fourth was Megan Foley who kicked from the bell to lead at the 600m mark against faster opponents but was overhauled in the last 200m. Her reward was a new personal best of 2m 16.54 secs.
