South of England AA Under 20 Championships - Portsmouth 28th & 29th May 2005

Saturday

There was a five medal haul on day one of the South of England under 20 Championships at windswept Portsmouth today as HMAC youngsters came away with one gold, three silvers and a bronze.

Bonne Buwembo showed his class to strike gold in the under 17 javelin by over 4m.  The Sam Harrison-coached Dagenham Park school pupil who was AAAs under 15 champion last season launched the 700gm spear  51.47m for a new PB.

There was silver service from the under 17 women, as Lisa Schofield, Lucy Sargent and Katie Richardson all finished runner-up in their events.

Lisa Schofield was the first to gain a podium pace after she powered through after a cautious start in the 300m hurdles. Facing a near-gale headwind in the back straight she adjusted her stride pattern & came through strongly on the bend to close down current UK no.1 Anna Newton, finishing second in 46.51s, just two-tenths behind the winner.

Junior International Lucy Sargent had another classic battle with arch-rival Joey Duck in the under17 200m. Just six days after beaten several senior internationals at Loughborough she had to give second-best to the Milton Keynes sprint star who edged her out in a tight finish, as Lucy clocked 24.00s.

The third silver came from middle distance ace Katie Richardson who was runner up to Aldershot's Stephanie Twell in a straight final in the under 17 1500m in 4m 39.79s.

The fifth medal was earned by Frankie Calder who sprinter faster than before, with the benefit of the strong tail wind to win bronze in the under 15 100m sprint in a lifetime best of 12.49s.

Megan Foley & Hayley Stibbs qualified for their 1500m & 800m u20 women's finals, while Ingrid Deane & Matt Bloy will also return to the track for Sunday's u15's 800m finals, as will Lauren Clark in the u17 women's 300m.

Lynsey Clark and Anthony Williams were both one place outside a medal as they placed fourth in the u20 discus & u17 triple jump respectively, Georgie Lou sales was fifth in the u15 girls' javelin, Lauren Clark sixth in the u17 discus, and Nicola Hill was 10th in the u15 long jump. Luke Stott's 200m PB was not enough to gain him a u20 final place.

Sunday

The medal roll continue on Sunday as club athletes took advantage of the calmer conditions to win another five medals, three gold and two bronze.

Matt Bloy was a fantastic 800m winner carving over two seconds off his PB to set a new club under 15 boys' record. After being boxed in early on he worked his way through to place third at the bell and unleashed his kick with 300m moving up to second on the back straight and closing down long time leader Bracknell's Adam Moore inside the last 50m to win gold and in the process erase David Herbert's club best set 29 years ago.

Lucy Sargent also came from behind to defend her u17 women's 100m final. She was left in the blocks as Joey Duck blasted away in search of a sprint double but Lucy reeled her in over the final strides to gain revenge for her 200m loss the day before.

The third gold went to Bethan Siddons whose third-time clearance at 1.60m brought her the under 15 girls high jump title in her first major championship.

Lisa Schofield ran superbly in the under 17 women's 80m hurdles to win her second medal of the weekend. She qualified for the final with a sluggish heat time but made no mistake when it mattered to power through over the last few hurdles to claim third place and bronze medal  with an English Schools qualifying time.

Also in third was Chloe van Wulven whose season's best in the under 20 women's 100m hurdles added to her other two previous bronze medals in these championships as an u17 in 2003, and as an u15 in 2002 - she missed last year's competition as she was in Milan competing for the English Schools team.

There were many other final performances on a strong showing for club athletes.

Ingrid Deane went with the first lap pace in the under 15 girls' 800m and although dropping back on the second lap kept her form for a new PB. Nicola Hill also set a PB in the u15 girls' 75m hurdles, placing fifth, and Catrina McAuliffe also set a new hurdles career best in her heat and gained useful experience competing in both shot & discus. Fellow hurdlers Richard Demko and Anthony Williams also lined up side by side in the u17 men's 100m hurdles final after placing third in their respective heats in fast times and Demko's charge over the final hurdles brought him another new PB in seventh, with Williams in eighth.

Other final places were gained by Emma Christmas, who improved her best in placing fifth in the u20W javelin, Frankie Calder, sixth in the u15g 200m, Hayley Stibbs, fifth in the u20W 800m, Megan Foley, ninth in the u20W 1500m, and Lauren Clark, eighth in the u17W 300m.
