There were four medals for club athletes in the South of England U20 and senior championships held at blustery Crystal Palace this weekend. Previously the U20s have held their championships in conjunction with the u15s and u17s but this year the Regional Championships combined the U20s with the seniors for the first time and the combination went well. Lucy
Sergeant edged closer toward fitness as she picked up a pair of U20 sprint
medals. On Saturday Lucy was edged out in the 200m finishing 2nd to rival
Joey Duck in 24.68s, and on Sunday in the shorter sprint she turned the
tables on Duck but had to settle for 3rd in 12.12s, as Asha Phillips and
Joscelynne Hopeson took gold & silver. Two more bronze medals came by virtue of Louise Matthews, who was close to her best, finishing 3rd in the senior javelin in 45.95m, and Chloe van Wulven who took u20 100m hurdles bronze medal in 14.85s. It was Chloe’s fourth hurdles bronze medal in these championships, having won U15 bronze in 2002, U17 bronze in 2003 and U20 bronze last year – she missed out in 2004 as she was in Milan representing English schools. Harriet
Scott smashed her 800m PB with 2m 10.21s, placing fourth, and was only
7-100ths off a medal in a tight finish. Her time was a PB by 1.6 secs and
took her to 14th on the club all-time lists
Other PBs were gained by Joe Forde (U20 hammer - 49.91m) and Mel Harrison (senior shot - 11.74m – 6th ). Harrison also placed 5th in the discus, Kirsty Smith was 4th in the U20 triple jump, Emma Christmas 5th in the U20 javelin and Danny Gamester 7th in the senior hammer, and Sam Harrison 10th in the javelin.
On the track Anthony Williams did well to place 5th in the u20 100m hurdles final, Katie Richardson was 7th in the u20 800m, Ross Clark 5th in the 500m, try for the recent southern u17 championships arrived too late – took on the u20 competition finishing 8th, just 4cms short of his week-old PB. Also
in action in the heats were Lauren Clark (U20- - 400m), Hayley Stibbs (U20
800m) and Robyn Matson (U20 1500m),
