SOUTHERN MEN'S LEAGUE DIVISION 3, YEOVIL 22 JULY 2000
As in our previous match a terrific team spirit enabled us to achieve third place above rivals Wimbledon and Haslemere by finishing ahead of them in the last event the 4 x 400m relay having been in fourth place all afternoon.
This was achieved despite a depleted team by everyone combining to cover all the events irrespective of their experience. A special mention and thanks goes to Brett Heath who competed for us rather than in the Gold Cup and in our hour of need competed in eight events, despite having not performed many of his events since his knee injury over three years ago. His contribution accounted for over 30 % of the team's total points with wins in the shot, and discus, and second places in the 110m hurdles, high jump, long jump and javelin plus competing in both relays. To round off his day he also achieved a tremendous PB of 13.80m in the shot. His fellow decathlete Darren Keevil also competed in eight events and both will be missed in our last match on August 5th.
There were also valuable wins for Joe Crane and Sanjay Sahota in the 200m although on the day everyone contributed to achieving our third place.
Unfortunately this still leaves us in 18th place in the league just one point above the relegation places. Consequently anything less than third place in our final match at Andover on the 5th August will result in relegation to division four.
I therefore hope everyone will make the effort to be available for this vital match.
