POOR START TO SOUTHERN LEAGUE CAMPAIGN
Men's Southern League Division 3, Finsbury Park 5 May 2001
An under-strength
Havering Mayesbrook AC senior men’s team struggled to make an impression in
their opening Southern Men’s Division 3 match at Finsbury Park on Saturday.
Finishing
in 4th place behind London Heathside (the host club), Harrow and
Wessex but in front of Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow, the team’s only
two ‘A’ string victories came from Junior League throwers Andrew Tierney and
Kevin Deacon. Tierney
won the Javelin event with a 33.63m effort whilst Deacon continued in good form
to take the Hammer competition. Deacon also won the ‘B’ Javelin and Tierney
finished second in the ‘B’ High Jump.
The
only other ‘B’ string success came in the Discus through Shaun Stewart who
had a good afternoon with second places in the 100m, 200m and High Jump. Another
athlete getting back to his best is Phil Tierney who took second in the 400m.
Other
second place points came from Kevin White (Discus) and Pat Gahagan (‘B’
800m). Robert Warner also had a busy afternoon with third place finishes in the
400m Hurdles, Steeplechase and ‘B’ Triple Jump. In addition, Gary Howard
(‘A’) and Tony Collins (‘B’) doubled-up to both take 3rd in
the 5000m.
Highlight
of the afternoon for the Havering Mayesbrook squad came in the final event with
an unexpected but well-earned victory by the 4x400m team. Kevin White and Pat
Gahagan ran solid first and second legs to keep the team in contention and Phil
Tierney and Shaun Stewart completed the job in fine style.
Sadly,
there were too many events uncontested by Havering Mayesbrook and the squad
needs strengthening before the next meeting at Norwich on June 2nd.
Final
result:
| 1st | London Heathside | 130 pts |
| 2nd | Harrow | 127 pts |
| 3rd | Wessex & Bath | 110 pts |
| 4th | Havering Mayesbrook | 80 pts |
| 5th | WSE & Hounslow | 71 pts |
