SOUTHERN LEAGUE BETTER AT SUTTON
Men's Southern League Division 3, Sutton Arena 23 June 2001
In
heatwave conditions at the Sutton Arena on Saturday, Havering Mayesbrook AC’s
Men’s Southern League team put up an improved display to ease their relegation
worries. With a stronger squad available, the team finished second behind a
strong North Devon team but ahead of Stevenage, Milton Keynes and Sutton.
It
could possibly have been even better. Hamstring injuries to both Matthew Kelsey
and Andy Green in the 100m resulted inevitably in a weakened sprint squad for
the 200m and relay.
On
the track, Kelsey’s injury occurred in the final few metres and he held on for
an excellent win for this recruit from the U17 team. In the 110m Hurdles, Kevin
Benton took the honours and he also finished second in the 400m Hurdles.
Kristian Hale was runner up in the ‘B’ sprint Hurdles and also in the 400m.
Perhaps
the highlight on the track for the Havering Mayesbrook team was Rob Warner’s
success in the 3000m steeplechase in a new personal best time. He had earlier
finished second in the ‘B’ 400m Hurdles.
In
the field, Kevin and Stuart Tufton returned to take the ‘A’ and
‘B’ Pole Vault respectively. Andrew Tierney from the Junior Men’s
squad, had a good day achieving three new personal bests in the Hammer (‘B’
2nd), Javelin (‘A’ 4th) and Shot (‘B’ 1st).
For good measure, he also competed in the High Jump and Triple Jump.
Daniel
Gamester was a welcome addition to the team and he took second place in the
‘A’ Hammer as did Jon Hart in the ‘B’ Long Jump. Veteran Kevin White won
the ‘B’ Discus with a new personal best throw of 31.29m.
The
next Southern League meeting for the men is on Saturday, July 7th at
Walton where Team Manager Peter Estcourt will be hoping for a similar display.
