BRETT HEATH STARS FOR SOUTHERN MEN AT WALTON
Men's Southern League Division 3, Walton-on-Thames 7 July 2001
Havering Mayesbrook AC’s Men’s Southern League team finished third behind Oxford and the home club in their match at Walton-on-Thames on Saturday. The result exceeded expectations and helped to ease relegation worries.
Of the team’s total of 101pts, 45 came from multi-eventers Brett Heath and Andrew Tierney. Heath won the Shot, Discus and Javelin with Tierney taking the ‘B’ Hammer and Shot events and finishing second in the Javelin with a new personal best performance. For good measure, Heath also won the ‘B’110m Hurdles and was the runner-up in the Long Jump and Hammer whilst Tierney gained additional points in the Triple Jump and Pole Vault.
Kevin Benton was another athlete making a significant contribution who followed up a season’s best when winning the 400m Hurdles with a second place in the sprint hurdles, a new personal best in the 200m and strong runs in both the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays.
The team was strengthened by the inclusion of a number of athletes from the under-17 age group. Maximum points came in the High Jump with splendid wins in wet conditions for Steven Prady and Mark Connelly.
Bob Thanda, in his first outing for the men’s team, achieved a new personal best of 51.7secs when finishing second in the 400m and followed-up by taking part in both relays.
Every team member contributed valuable points including Rob Warner (400m Hurdles, 800m, 3000m Steeplechase and Triple Jump); Gary Howard (1500m and 5000m); Jon Hart (100m and 400m and both relays); Kevin White (100m, 800m and Discus); and Gary Norbury with a new personal best in the 1500m.
