FIELD DAY AS SOUTHERN MEN PLACE SECOND IN HOME MATCH

Men's Southern League Division 3, Mayesbrook Park 21 July 2001

A superb performance by HMAC field event team helped the team place second in their Southern League Division 3 fixture at Mayesbrook today. In a close match HMAC finished on 117 points, just one-and-a half points shy of winners Tonbridge, but ahead of East Grinstead on 111.5, Hercules Wimbledon 102 & Brighton 84. 

The home throwers were in good shape, scoring 34 out of 40 possible points. Steve Archer flew in from the World Veterans Championships in Australia to pile up points with four second placings, two in the A and two in the B strings. He was well supported by Darron Keevil, competing for the team for the first time this season with a B string double success, as well as placing second in the javelin, the same place claimed by junior hammer thrower Kevin Deacon. 

The jumps also contributed good points. There was a double pole vault success as veteran Stuart Tufton took the A string and newcomer Russell Feint, competing for the first time in 7 years, easily won the B event. Another double victory came in the high jump where under 17s Steve Prady and Mark Connelly both won comfortably. Prady was also runner up in the Long Jump.

On the track Kevin Benton defied the blustery conditions to power to victory in the 400m hurdles A race and later returned for an equally emphatic 110m hurdles win. Veteran Ian Chamberlain showed good form to take the B sprint hurdles, and also gained long jump points. There was a steeplechase PB for Rob Warner, who carved six seconds off his previous best time and a return to action for Martin Chester, who gained B string second place points. Gary Howard also placed second in the 5000m.

Now that the team has secured a further season in Division 3 Team Manager Peter Estcourt hopes to gain a higher league position with a good placing in the final fixture at Thurrock in two weeks.
