SOUTHERN LEAGUE MEN MISS OUT ON THIRD
Men's Southern League Division 3, Stevenage 4 May 2002
The Men's Southern League team just missed out on fourth place at Stevenage on Saturday, finishing one and a half points shy of third placed Richmond & Twickenham. The small team worked hard and did well to cover all events but the lack of field events experts cost the team dearly and once again the lack of available athletes for the opening fixture leaves the team playing catch up for the rest of the season.
The track events brought a good series of results with four B string wins. Newcomer Luke Stott took the 200m B and also placed third in the long jump and ran in the relay. There were good points in the middle distance events as there were three B string wins and one second. The victories came from Neill Collins who took the 800m in a new best, veteran Gary Howard's 5000m B success while there was a welcome return from former club stalwart Ian Mulley who won the B steeplechase and for good measure was B 1500m runners up. The A string middle distance events also brought good points as Tony Collins (5000m) and junior Martin Heys, making his Southern League debut in the A 800m, both bagged second places. Neill Collins also took fourth in the 1500m and Martin Chester was fourth in the A steeplechase. The busy Chester also filled in in both hurdles, hammer and shot put!
Jon Hart was also kept busy tackling six events and the 4x400m relay with is best result coming in the B 400m where he was runners up. Sprinter Andy Green placed second in the 100m, third in the 200m and hurled the javelin for fourth place points before rounding off with a leg in the sprint relay.
Father and son pairing Stuart and Kevin Tufton were also victorious taking first place honours in both A & B pole vaults. Mark Connelly was in good shape with second place points in both high and long jumps as well as running the 400m.
Veteran Kevin White covered three throwing events and in his speciality the discus he had to put in a safe effort after two no throws, losing out on valuable points.
Team manager Peter Estcourt hopes to be able to call on more athletes - including field events specialists - when the team travel to Reading for the second round fixture in two weeks and hopes for a better showing.
