Havering Mayesbrook’s senior men secured their second victory of the season at Ilford on Saturday.
A
good all round team performance earned them victory by 12.5 points and
maintained a 100% record. Recording
12 wins, with maximum points in the Hammer and Long Jump, and 10 second places
the Mayesbrook based team ran out comfortable winners.
Multi-eventers
Mark Bishop and Leo Barker were the major point scorers, with Team Captain Mark
Bishop grabbing second place finishes in the Pole Vault, Discus and 110m
Hurdles. Leo returning to fitness won the Long Jump, “B” Javelin and was
part of the victorious sprint quartet.
Sprinter
Matt Russell continued his impressive early season form winning the 100m before
being given second spot in the 200m with the same 21.7 time as the winner. He
was well supported in the sprint by Andrew Bartlett, who secured 2nd
spot in both the 100m and 200m. Scott Spencer eased his way to victory in the
400m and Phil Tierney recorded his first victory over the 400m Hurdles when he
held on for a “B” string win.
Middle
distance winners included reigning Essex champion Trevor Keys in the 5000m and
Chris Coates who won the “B” 1500m. Martin Heys dipped under 2 minutes in
his first outing for the Division 1 team when he placed 3rd in the
800m.
Hammer
throwers Kevin Deacon and Danny Gamester recorded a win double and Stuart Wells
continues his return to fitness with a victory in the “B” string Long Jump.
The
most dramatic event of the day was Havering’s victory in the sprint relay. A
great start by Stuart Wells gave a lead at the change over, but second leg
runner Andrew Bartlett tweaked a hamstring after 50 metres but still managed to
get the baton to Leo Barker on the third leg. Leo’s explosive run pulled
Havering back to first place where anchor leg Matt Russell made no mistake in
claiming what had seemed an unlikely victory.
The
next match is at Newham, on June 26, where the Havering Mayesbrook athletes hope
to continue their good start and take another step on their way back to national
league athletics.
