Havering Mayesbrook’s senior competed in a “top of the table” match at Newham on Saturday. The match included top Club Southend, hosts & 4th placed Newham & Essex Beagles, 5th team Enfield, with 10th placed Bournemouth completing the line up. As expected it proved to be an exciting, and tough match, with the points very close throughout the afternoon.
As
usual Multi-eventers Mark Bishop and Leo Barker were the major point scorers,
with Bishop grabbing second place in the Pole Vault and “B” Discus as well
as competing in the 110m Hurdles, Triple Jump & High Jump. Leo scored well
in the Javelin, Shot, Discus and Long Jump as well as a leg of the sprint relay.
Matt
Russell was the star of the day, recording the only “A” string wins in the
100m – 10.8 and a very good 21.6 in the 200m, he was also part of the sprint
relay team.
Hurdler
Kevin Benton was well placed in the one lap event but stumbled on the final
hurdle and lost all chance in the race, but undaunted, returned to the track to
grab 2nd spot in the 110m Hurdles.
The
Middle distance squad amassed good points. Gavin Maley making a last ditch
effort to grab 2nd spot in the 800m, Martin Heys going one better in
the “B” race with a heroic last lap, he managed to reel in the long time
leader a grab a win in the last few strides. 1500m men Chris Coates and Rory
Geraghty came 3rd and 2nd in the races and 5000m runners,
Trevor Keys and Matt Bland improved on that to record a 2nd and 1st
place. Steeplechasers Jason Lendon (2nd) and “B” string winner
Rob Warner increased the track tally.
On
the field Hammer throwers Kevin Deacon and Danny Gamester continue to grab the
points, Danny won the “B” event while
Kevin placed 2nd behind the 1994 Commonwealth medallist Paul Head –
who also coaches both Havering Athletes. Sam Harrison won the “B” javelin
and veteran Stuart Tufton won the “B” Pole Vault.
But
despite the teams best efforts Southend and host Club Newham proved just too
strong on day and Havering came in third in a tightly fought contest.
Despite
the set back the Club has retained second spot in the league table and can
remain optimistic of finishing high enough to earn a place in the end of Season
play-off match.
So
it’s on to Woking on the 10th of the month looking to get back to
winning ways, to keep up the challenge.
