With double the number of athletes that have competed in recent matches and a renewed belief that we could maintain our status in Division 3 despite slipping into the relegation zone, everyone performed way beyond expectations to secure our first win for four seasons and in doing so virtually guarantee Division 3 survival with only one match remaining.

In the sprints there was a winning return for Luke Stott  (under 20) who won the 200m “A” race in 23.1 despite a strong head wind, having earlier secured second place in the 100m “A” in 11.4 and later anchoring the both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. Luke also teamed up with David Leonard to form a winning partnership in the long jump with Luke taking the “A” event with his final jump of 6.33m against David’s jump of 5.77m.

Supporting Luke in the sprints was Simon Parker who competed in a total of six events the highlight of which was a personal best and winning performance in the high jump with a jump of 1.70m. Simon also won the “B” 100m in 12.0 as well as being part of the victorious relay teams.

It was good to see a number of younger athletes turn out for the match with Michael Waller (under 17) running an excellent race in winning the 400m “A” in 52.6 before also being part of the winning relay teams.

In the middle distance Ashley Reece (under17) deservedly gained a personal best for his impressively front running performance in winning the 800m”A” in 2:00.9 before teaming up with Neil Collins to win both the “A” and “B” 1500m. Ashley also showed he is a talented high jumper by winning the “B” high jump with 1.60m and later ran a strong leg of the winning 4x400m relay.

In the throwing events although South London Harriers had the Strongest Man in Britain contender competing in the shot putt, he was no match for Steve Archer who responded with a seasons best putt of 11.65m to win comfortably, and then followed up with wins in the “A” string discus - 30.72m and “B” string hammer - 26.07m.  Also busy in the throws was Andrew Tierney (under20) who increased his personal best in the javelin by almost 3m to 39.07m in gaining second place in the “A” string event , before going on to win the “B” discus with 29.34m having previously achieving third place in the hammer  “A” with 27.30m,

Similarly Darron Keevil gained valuable points in winning the “B” string shot putt and javelin with throws of 10.07m and 38.66m respectfully, together with second place in the 100m hurdles.

Of course our winning margin of 6.5 points over Medway and Maidstone would not have been possible if it had not been for the marvelous team spirit shown by all who competed and so aptly demonstrated by team captain Kevin White and under 17 athlete Christian Newton in the 3000m steeplechase and 110m/400m hurdles which I am sure will inspirer the team to even better days in the future.
