Two winning performances from 16-year-olds Eugene
Ayanful and Anthony Williams failed to inspire a weak senior men's team at a
rain-soaked Newham on Saturday.
A week after making it a sprint double in the Essex championships and celebrating his 16th birthday Eugene's fine form carried over as he enhanced his growing reputation with a narrow win over Ashford's experienced James Bridge. He was later runner up in the 200m and ran an impressive leg for the sprint relay squad. Anthony notched up his first victory against senior opposition as he again improved his long jump best to 6.37m, exceeding his week-old best three times, and he later extended his triple jump PB to 12.70m in third and scored points in the high jump and relay. Skipper Mark Bishop again tackled seven events and added a brace of wins to the cause with B string successes in the long jump and javelin, also placing 2nd in the pole vault and adding points in three other events. Sam Harrison was victorious in the Javelin A and scored hammer points. There was a welcome comeback to the hammer as Danny Gamester returned from a knee operation to place second, and he also contributed shot & discus points. Veteran Stuart Tufton was also second in the B pole vault. Kevin Benton returned to his favoured 400m hurdles event after his recent London marathon effort, finishing 2nd in the B race. He also placed in the B 110m hurdles and ran a leg in the 4x400m relay. Another London Marathon competitor Rob Dickenson returned to track action with third in the 500m B event. In the A 400mH Phil Tierney again improved his PB, and ran in the B 200m and both relays. Matt Russell's tight hamstrings restricted him to just one run and he was third in the B 400m. The team battled hard to cover the gaps but nine fourth placings & eight last places proved costly and the team ended the day in fourth. |
