Havering Mayesbrook’s senior men’s team went to Milton Keynes on Saturday with only 11 athletes after some last minute injuries reduced their numbers.

The 11 fought well, Matt Russell returned from a long-term hamstring injury to gain maximum points in sprints. Gavin Maley competed for the first time since the opening fixture in April after illness, coming home in second spot in both the 800m and the grueling 3000m steeplechase. Another athlete returning from long term injury was Matt Bland who fought his way to 3^rd place in 5000m.

Mark Bishop put in his usual stint, his  six events included a win in the “B” string javelin where he threw in excess of 50 metres.  Andrew Tierney also had a busy day taking on five events jumping and throwing  despite his blistered feet.

Middle distance runner Salvator Mutijima took on the 800m where he held on for a runners-up place, and effort repeated in “B” string 200m.  More track success from Glen Hill grabbing 2^nd spot and a pb in the “A” 1500m on his debut for the Club.  Rob Dickenson also finished second in the “B” 1500m despite running with an injured hamstring.

Throwers Danny Gamester and Sam Harrison also finished in second places in the Hammer and Javelin respectively. With Hammer thrower Joe Forde throwing his way to third “B” string before taking on the Shot Putt.

The team performed well but in the end lack of numbers meant a fourth place finish, dropping them to 18^th place in league, only just above the relegation places.  With only two matches left time is running out to claw their way to safety, and retain division one status.
