A weakened Southern Men's League team did well to place second against a strong Yeovil team in their third round Division 1 fixture at Swindon on Saturday.

With a number of athletes missing and with Matt Russell and Chris Coates still recovering from illness it was always going to be difficult to win. But to make things worse Scott Spencer pulled a calf muscle warming up and a number of athletes had to leave early due to evening commitments so all things considered runners up spot was a good result..

A string wins were the preserve of Bonne Buwembo in the javelin and Danny Gamester in the hammer and Sam Harrison and Bradley Reece ensured doubles with B string victories in these events – Bradley was close to his career best with the senior weight.

There were four other B victories Matt Bland won the 1500m B event, and Grant Twist was runner up in the A.  Illness-affected Chris Coates was well below his recent best but took 5000m B honours and Ian Anthony set a new PB in third in the A. Veteran skipper Mark Bishop won the B 110m hurdles, and as always contributed good points across the range of events.  Anthony Williams could not match his recent PB but still won the B triple jump, and was second in the long jump and third in the sprint hurdles. Fellow junior Joseph Ramie piled up points with second places in the 200m and Triple jump and third in the 100m, and Vince Lazaro partnered Williams with another second in the B long jump.

Jason Lendon was second in both steeplechase and B pole vault. There was a welcome return after a long break from Ashley Reece who added points in three events and both relays.

The result keeps the squad in the promotion hunt at the halfway stage of the six match season.
