The Southern Men's League Division 1 squad's promotion hopes took a serious dent when they trailed in fourth at Ashford on Saturday when a second place finish had been achievable.

A combination of strong opposition and a number of absences due to the English Schools Championships and UK Trails and injuries left the team struggling in the sprints and throws.

The highlights were career bests for Anthony Williams in the long jump and Rob Warner in the 3000m steeplechase. Williams also added a B triple jump win and hurdles points.  There was an impressive win for 16 year old Andrew Lewis in the 400m on his senior debut.

Joseph Ramie won both A triple jump and B long jump and scored well in both sprints.

Ross Clarke added useful points with  second places in both 800m, where he clocked his second fastest ever time, after his latest PB of 1:52.6s, and he was second also in the B 400m.

Gant Twist was another runner up in the 'chase as was Chris Coates in the 5000m. Mark Bishop was again drafted to cover the gaps and was winner of the hurdles, second in the vault but gained single points only in each of his four throwing events. He was pressed into service to anchor the 400m relay squad who were third. Dan Gamester also covered all four throws with third places in A hammer and B shot & discus.

James Murphy (200), Jon Buckler (high jump), the 1500m pairing of Rob Dickenson and Ian Anthony completed the roster.

The weaknesses in throws and 400m hurdles may restrict our play off chances unless the team improve in these areas in final match on 2nd August.
