Saturday’s hot conditions were met with an equally hot Belgrave squad visited our home fixture, but the Havering Mayesbrook never- say-die attitude nearly succeeded, as with two events to go we were still mathematically in with a chance of winning the day.

Kieran Nelson started the proceedings with fourth in the 400m hurdles, then 3rd in the 110m hurdles then winning the B triple jump. Brother Jake got a good 3rd in a competitive Long jump then going one better in the High Jump with a good 1.75 clearance. It was good to have Stuart Tufton competing and he was unlucky to lose the pole vault on count back.

The other end of the age group saw Nathan Steele get 2nd in the A string 100m before winning the A string Triple jump and took a leg in the 4x100m team, his training partner Dere Coker got third in the Long jump and was part of the 4x100 squad. Staying with the youth we saw Jordan Brown run a gutsy 100m after his blocks slipped and got third in the 200m, then competed in both relays running a good leg in the winning 4x400 team.

Scott Spencer made a welcome return getting third in the A 400m then a few minutes later doing the same in the 200m, then ran a leg of the 4x100 before leading the 4x400m team home. Simon Richards ran an impressive B 400m being rewarded with a PB and also ran a good leg in the winning 4x400m. Season’s debut by Steve Rand was rewarded with a win in the 5000m.

The athlete who ran the furthest on this very hot day was Dan Miller who got 2nd in the 5000m and was rewarded with a win and a PB in the 3000sc. The 800m duo of Ian Price and Anthony Soar won in convincing style then Anthony went on to get 2nd in the B 1500. Joe Waked made a welcome return to the southern league leading from gun to tape in the A 1500 then running a good leg in the winning 4x400m.

Once again the Dynamic Duo - Arron Bonning & Darron Keevil - the strong men of the Southern league - competed in a dozen events between them amassing an amazing 35 points - more than a third of the total points and they still manage to get PBs

The final fixture is at Hemel Hempstead on the 31st July.  A few athletes promised to attend but missed our home match. Could they make the effort to the last match as we are up against the undefeated league leaders Dacorum & Tring and we need a good second place to maintain our fourth place in the league.
