SOUTHERN WOMEN'S LEAGUE, HEMEL HEMPSTEAD 28 APRIL 2001
Newly promoted Havering Mayesbrook’s Southern
Women’s team got their Division 1 league programme off to a flying start with
an emphatic win at Hemel Hempstead, last Saturday. Their 50 points win over Thames Valley Harriers, and other
well-established clubs as
Enfield & Haringey, Shaftesbury Barnet and the home team of Dacorum &
Tring, confirmed that they are a match for anyone in the top division, and can
look forward to another exciting season.
| Having
recently gained her first Great Britain vest for an Under 23 indoor multi-event
International in France, Kate Brewington (see right) continued to show her tremendous all
round ability by competing in 5 individual A string events, amassing a personal
points tally of 20. There were wins
in both the 100m hurdles and long jump, a second place in the high jump, and
third places in the 100m and pole vault. Even
as a late substitute in the pole vault, Kate’s competitive debut in this event
finished with her clearing 2.20m, adding yet another club record to her name. |

Earlier
in the day, Sarah Deacon had increased her own club record in the hammer by
nearly 2 metres with a throw of 37.40m, in a competition that was won by
Shaftesbury’s GB international, Lyn Sprules.
Hannah Gamester (B pole vault) completed the field victories.

| Laurie
Cossey (800m), Lesley Felton (B 800m), Lauren Deadman (1500m), Joanne Sullivan
(B 1500m), Debbie Sullivan (3000m) and Haley Hawes (B 3000m) gained maximum
points with a clean sweep of middle distance wins. Francesca Rigby and Sara Sappinen joined up with Hannah
Gamester and Kate Brewington to take first place in the 4x100m, and the success
was repeated in the 4x400m with Lesley Felton, Laurie Cossey, Debbie and Joanne
Sullivan. |

In
the younger age group, the Under 15’s surpassed their record of 15 wins from
21 events, set in the corresponding first fixture last year, by registering a
total of 17 victories. If sprint
star Nicola Schofield had not been forced to withdraw due to injury, just before
the 200m, the total could well have been higher.
On
the track there were A and B string doubles from Sara Luck and Lynsey Clark
(800m), Megan Foley and Natalie Adams (1500m), and Danielle Ross and Katie
O’Sullivan (75m hurdles). Christina
Kalejaiye (B 100m) completed the individual wins, and then with Lynsey Clark,
Danielle Ross and Amy Rogers, anchored the 4x100m relay team to victory.

The
success on the field was even more impressive, with only one point being dropped
out of a possible maximum of 50. Long
jumper Emma Bonny, who topped the National Rankings as an Under 13 last season,
set a new personal best of 5.05m when winning the A string long jump.
She is now only 20cm off the Under 15’s Club record, and has nearly two
years in which to break it.
Caroline
Smith also set new outdoor PB’s
of 9.00m and 4.54m, when winning both the shot and B long jump.
Chelsea Harrison celebrated her league debut with a win double in the B
discus, and B javelin. There were further wins, completing individual doubles for
Katie O’Sullivan (high jump), Sara Luck (B high jump), Danielle Ross (B shot)
and Lynsey Clark (discus).
The
next fixture at Guildford on Saturday 19th May, will provide the team
with the toughest league competition for many years.
The opposition will be Aldershot, Farnham & District, and Windsor,
Slough & Eton, who finished last season’s league in 2nd and 3rd
positions respectively, along with newly promoted teams from Exeter, and
Parkside (Harrow).
