SOUTHERN WOMEN'S LEAGUE, SUTTON 23 JUNE 2001

In their second consecutive top of the table match, Havering Mayesbrook ladies again turned in a superb performance to finish second to last year’s League Champions, Ashford.  Along with other highly placed teams from Sutton, and Stevenage, and relegation zoned North Devon, they had the opportunity of competing on the brand new track surface at Carshalton, on 23rd June.  With a number of Senior athletes unavailable, or on holiday, the result confirmed that the team has enough depth to maintain their presence in the race for the title.

Team Captain Debbie Sullivan led the way with a classy win in the 800m, a somewhat shorter distance for the GB international.  With the Stevenage runner well clear after 200m, Debbie’s experience began to tell as she gradually closed the gap, easing into the lead with 200m to go, and winning by a clear margin.  In the B 800m, there was a win for Club newcomer Hayley Mottram, in her debut league appearance since moving from Thurrock Harriers.  Hayley is a welcome addition to the team, and will have many more successes in the future.

There was another double victory in the 1500m, with Joanne Sullivan taking the honours in the B race, whilst sister Debbie completed her own personal double in the A race.  Hayley Hawes continued her fine season with another win in the B 3000m.

In the field events there were good performances throughout, in the face of strong opposition from Ashford and Sutton.  The long jump provided the team with the two victories on the day, Kate Brewington with 5.53m in the A competition, and Hannah Gamester with 5.13m in the B.  Earlier in the day, Hannah had set a new Club Junior record when finishing fourth in the A string pole vault, with a clearance of 2.20m.

Nina Brennan, contesting the only two events in the Under 17 age group programme, had mixed fortunes.  Success came first in the 300m hurdles, leading from start to finish, but then had to settle for fourth place in the 80m hurdles later in the day.

The Under 15’s continued their steamroller season by scoring 98 points from a maximum of 105.  Top honours, on a day when everyone was a star, went to three time individual winner Katie O’Sullivan.  Having won the high jump and B 75m hurdles, Katie then produced a new personal best performance of 8.70m to take the shot putt.

The impressive display continued with wins from Christina Kalejaiye (B 100m, B long jump), Sara Luck (1500m, B high jump), Danielle Ross (75m hurdles, B shot putt), Nicola Schofield (200m), Charlotte Watkins (B 800m), Natalie Adams (B 1500m), Lynsey Clark (discus), and Chelsea Harrison (B javelin).  The relay quartet of Danielle Ross, Nicola Schofield, Amy Rogers and Christina Kalejaiye recorded their fastest time of the season when winning the 4x100m in a time of 52.0 seconds.

At the top of the table, wins for both Windsor and Aldershot have edged Havering Mayesbrook off the No.1 spot, into third place.  The team will be back in action at Kingston Upon Thames on 14th July, when the opposition will be Epsom and Ewell, Bedford, Bournemouth, and Basildon.
