SOUTHERN WOMEN'S LEAGUE, ABINGDON 27 APRIL 2002

The Ladies Southern Women's League team finished a solid third on Saturday at cold and windy Abingdon. With many of the senior team unavailable through injury or giving priority to the U20 match the following day, there were some gaps in the senior ranks, particularly the middle distances, but the under 15s were in dominant form and helped Havering finish clear in third place.

The strong following wind blew the sprinters and hurdlers to fast times with a series of new best marks.  

The hurdles events were a happy hunting ground, bringing six wins out of seven races.  Chloe van Wulven and Lisa Schofield completed a 75m hurdles double, both in new best times, while Claire Sargent and Nicola Schofield also made it a winning combination in the 80mH, Nicola smashing her PB. She had earlier won the 300m hurdles event.  In the senior hurdles Kate Brewington faced a rematch with Radley's Kay Reynolds who scorched to an excellent 13.9secs, four tenths clear of Kate. Claire Brennan made up for poor start in the B event to come through over the last hurdle to win. She had earlier placed third in the 400m hurdles event.

A new PB was also recorded by Lucy Sargent (100m), while Lisa Schofield added a discus A win, backed up by Vicky Smith's B success, in her first attempt at the event, while Christina Kalejaiye notched a 200m and shot double win, as well as A 100m third place. Hurdler Chloe van Wulven added a 200m PB and equalled her high jump best. placing third in each.

For the u15s good points were scored in the middle distances as  1500m pair of Charlotte Watkins and Robyn Matson both placed second, as did Vicky Smith in the 800m B, while Megan Foley had to settle for third in a top quality 800m A race. Lauren Smith made her club debut and scored well to place second in the javelin and third in the shot.

Senior wins were thinly spread apart from Claire Brennan's hurdles win, but Kate Brewington took the high jump honours with Melissa Felton (discus B) and Sarah Deacon (hammer) also victorious while sprinter Terri Johnson added a new hammer PB. Laurie Cossey was 2nd in the 800m. Completing the depleted senior line up were Hannah Gamester (fourth - long jump, 200m and pole vault), Corrina Keevil (third high jump B and fourth triple jump A), Sarah Benton (fourth B triple jump and fifth javelin) and Lesley Felton (third 800m B and fifth 400m).
