SOUTHERN WOMEN'S LEAGUE, WALTON 8 JUNE 2002

A strong Havering Mayesbrook Ladies team cruised to victory in the third Southern Women's League Division One fixture at Walton-on-Thames on Saturday, finishing over 50 points clear of the opposition. As well as new club records set by Sarah Deacon (U20 & Senior Hammer) and Kirsty Smith (U17 Triple Jump) there were PBs galore, particularly in the u15 age category.

Sarah Deacon opened the meeting in style hurling the hammer further than before to win the event in a new club under 20 and senior record of 42.91m, half a metre beyond her previous best. The 19-year-old from Harold Hill went on to claim runners up spot in the discus.

Kirsty Smith's triple jump record of 10.63m came in the final round after she had hopped, stepped and jumped to 10.58m in the fourth round. In addition to extending her own club u17 record by 17 cms the 15 year-old's leap took her to second on the club u20 all-time list, and placed her second in the competition. Her B string colleague Lynsey Clark, also 15, was also in good form, adding one cm to her own best, jumping 10.21m, also in second place.

The seniors contributed nine individual victories. International Debbie Sullivan was a double winner with 1500m A and 800m B string victories to confirm her good form going into next weekend's Commonwealth Games Trials, where she tackles the 10,000m. Kate Brewington, who will also see action in the trials at Manchester, showed good form in winning the 100m hurdles, as well as scoring in the 200m, shot and javelin - four of the seven heptathlon events.

Lauren Deadman broke off from her A level revision to run away with the 800m A event, while Hayley Mottram also took time out from her A level exam preparations to scorch to a new PB in winning the B 400m event. Laurie Cossey placed second in the A 400m event, equalling her season's best.

There were B string field event wins from Terri Johnson (hammer), Melissa Felton (discus) and Claire Brennan, making a winning return to her former speciality, the high jump. Johnson also ran in the 200m B, Felton scored shot points while Brennan also took part in both hurdles events, placing second (100m B) and third (400mA). Katie O'Sullivan, who partnered Claire in both the high jump and 400m hurdles, was in eye-catching form. The Upminster 15 year-old tackle the pole vault, for only the second time, placing second in the B event and went on to impress in her 400m hurdles debut, placing second. But she saved the best for last as she upped her high jump best to first 1.60m, and then added two more cms, as she cleared 1.62m, taking her to fourth on the club all-time u17 list, and sixth in the senior list.

Completing the senior team, contributing valuable points were Jo Sullivan (3000m - 2nd),  Helen Biscoe (1500m - 2nd), Hannah Gamester (pole vault - third and 100m - 5th), Francesca Rigby (long jump B - 4th) and Laura Jones (100m B - 4th & 200m B - 3rd).

There was a clean sweep in the hurdles events for under 17s and Claire Sargent and Nicola Schofield made it a A & B string double in the 80m event, while Schofield was an easy winner in the 300m hurdles event. Both also contributed to the senior team, with Sargent long jumping and running the in the sprint relay, while Schofield ran a leg in the 4 x 400m relay squad.

The under 15s again swept all before them winning 13 of the 20 individual events. Chloe Van Wulven was a double A string winner in the 75m hurdles and high jump, while Lisa Schofield claimed a B string double, with successes in the 75m hurdles, and discus, the latter in a new PB. Lauren Smith also recorded two B string wins, in the shot and javelin, both in new PBs. Lauren McVicar also added to her javelin best in winning the A event, and also set new personal marks in the 200m, placing third.

Field event wins were also notched up by Christina Kalejaiye who set a new long jump PB in winning the A event, while Lucy Sargent's B string effort made in a winning double. Both also contested the sprints and relay.  Louise Yard won the A discus and placed second in the shot.

Charlotte Watkins returned to form to dip under 5 minutes in winning the combined A & B1500m event in which Katie Richardson set a new PB in winning the B string. Another middle distance runner to taste success was Vicky Smith who came from behind to win the 800m A race, running three seconds faster than before. Completing the team was Lauren Clark who took two second places in her return to competition after about of shingles.

The results lifts the team to a creditable sixth in the division.
